Haha - all of my friends make fun of me all the time for being "psycho" about everything. My FI and I got engaged on Valentine's Day (which is also my 30th B-Day). One week to the day later I put down a deposit for the reception hall, our wedding date is May 29, 2010. It is April 24th I have almost everything done! Granted I live in Bergen County NJ the wedding capital of the world. I am not sure how it is in Boston but when we went to look at venues in February most of 2010 was already booked. Only a few Saturday's were still available at our choice locations. I bought my dress about 2 weeks ago, picked my bridesmaid dresses, sent out save the dates, booked photography, booked music and lighting, ordered the items I need to make the invitations (have been working on these for about 3 weeks now). All we have left is a quote from the florist we met in February, buying the rings and booking limos. I am like you - too excited (if that is even possible - I mean it's your wedding you should be crazy excited!!!) Who cares what everyone thinks, plan plan plan - that is the excitement right?!?! If you start now you can shop for the best deals and get the best possible choices by having the time to do lots of research. I say start! Good luck and congrats!
my FI thinks I'm insane about talking about wedding plans!! We got engaged last Sept so I've waited long enought!
I'm a date twin, right now I already have my venue booked, bought my wedding dress, photographer booked, started working with a friend that's a graphic designer on our invitations, programs, etc. Next is finding an officiant, DJ and florist - planning on doing this in the next couple months. I'll be pretty much done with the big vendors. Oh yea, my BMs are coming in July to look for BM dresses, we wanted my wedding dress to come in first so they can all see the dress on and get a swatch to bring with us.
I also plan on working on my DIY projects like centerpieces so I'm starting to look for items from Michael's and testing my ideas out.
Keep in mind that our wedding is during a holiday weekend and near prom season so booked everything early, especially transportation.
Good luck! :) Yay for May 30, 2010!!
oops, sorry for the date mix up. For some reason i thought your date at may 30th!
Ok, that makes me feel better! I got engaged Feb 4th (one day before my birthday!) and by March, we had our reception site + church. My mom keeps saying that we have so much time to "worry" and plan, but I think that I'm allowed to do stuff now and enjoy being engaged, right? I already started designing our centerpieces and we are having our engagement photos done in May! I'm not a bridezilla or anything, but I do believe that I'm allowed to enjoy this time and get excited about stuff. There shouldn't be rules to when I can start my projects and book stuff!
I haven't found my dress yet but I haven't gone shopping in about a month for one. I live in Boston and all my best friends and sisters are out of state so I'm waiting until I can be with them to get it.
Thanks, ladies!
Nope! I picked out my BM dresses a year early, too! the more you get done now, the more you can focus on later. Just make sure you only start stuff if you are 100% sure it's what you want. You don't want to spend forever second guessing yourself
@Ms Talks-A-Lot: You're a date twin and almost a county twin. I grew up, and my family still lives, in Bergen County, though I'm actually getting married in Passaic County. Where are you having your reception? We're doing The Tides in North Haledon.
I got engaged Christmas 2008. So far, I've only booked my ceremony/reception location. I hope to have a photographer, DJ, and officiant booked shortly, and I'm working on save-the-date ideas (won't get those out until after this semester ends). I've looked online a little bit at wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses. I guess I've also picked out potential centerpieces that one of my bridesmaids will start working on maybe over the summer.
I'm debating making my own pocketfold invitations this summer since it will be the most free time I'll have before the wedding (not that I'll actually have a lot of time).
Just like everyone I have started things. We had a big set back in that we completely changed our location of our wedding.
But I have the photographer, the vacation homes, the invitations designed, the save the dates designed.
It just recieved my Gocco in the mail! SO EXCITED! So it is time to start printing! I can't wait!
We are getting closer to the one year make ladies! Yeah soon we won't be thought of as so psych!
We are getting married May 22, 2010, almost a year to the date!! I am also very excited and have booked my reception venue, church, d.j. and lighting, makeup and hair! Evidently the makeup lady is in high demand and books almost a year in advance! I will find out how good she is tomorrow b/c she is doing my makeup for our engagment pics tomorrow! I have also found my dress and BM's dresses. I think thats it..... This month is find a florist month. Every month I have different projects to work on, so when the big day comes, it will all be taken care of! YAY! Congrats to all my May 2010 twins!
I'm also a May 22, 2010 bride! So far we have our venue and church booked, photographer and I have my dress. We have a lot of work ahead of us! Hiring a caterer, tent rental company, DJ, florist, figuring out bridal party clothing, making invitations. I'm so excited to start planning! one year from tomorrow :-)
@Ms Talks-A-Lot yay for Bergen County! I grew up there as well and my family still lives there.
I don't think it's too early to start projects! Well, I say that because I started them already, lol. I'm almost done making my save the dates for my May 30, 2010 wedding, although I probably won't send them out for a while. I just like paper crafts though (not that I'm that good at it, it's just fun!) so I enjoy thinking about designs for programs, invitations, etc.
I'm sort of in the design phase of making my STDs and they will be sent out hopefully before the end of the month! Woo!
I'm not until October 2010 and I've already started on a few things - I like being able to pace myself, and get things done slowly. I can do my research and not feel like I'm down to the wire. We booked our venue before the official engagement and I'm so glad. Now when I see something I already know if it's a good deal or not, I have time to wait for a sale, and I'm not settling for things we don't love. Also, since we're in the fall, I'll get to take advantage of all the after Thanksgiving clearance for decorative things.
I get a lot of "wow, you have so much time" comments, but I'll be glad when it gets close to have so much done.
I'm actually a June 2010 bride, but I've gotten a lot done so far. We reserved our venue, caterer, and photographer about a month ago. I also got my bridesmaid dresses over a year out. I just found exactly what I was looking for, and it was a department store find, so we had to act fast!
I've already designed my save the dates, invites, and programs, but I haven't printed any of them yet. Lots of those around me think I'm crazy for doing things so far out, but I'd rather pace myself than have to do everything at the last minute. I mean if I have all this time, it would be stupid to not use it wisely.
So far all I've done is book the venue and tried on a few dresses, but I start graduate school in August, and once my first year ends will have a week-long gap between finals and the wedding, so I'm basically trying to get AS MUCH done by August as possible. And yes, I think my friends and family think I'm a little overzealous, and definitely my FI, but it's okay! The early bird gets the worm! And the best food, venue, photographer, etc...
Whoa, I thought I was ahead of the game in booking our ceremony and reception site basically a year in advance, but some of you gals totally showed me up! LOL
I'm meeting with a photographer on Monday to do a consult and I was thinking that I was silly for looking at this stuff so far in advance. The next two big to-do items on my list are Save the Dates and engagement pics (to be included with the Save the Dates) and getting everything on our wedding website up to date.
We got engaged last September and I have been anxiously waiting to the one year mark to really get started on crafting. I bought my dress in February and 2 of my 4 bridesmaids have already picked out their dresses (they are picking their own dresses with in the colors I requested). My mom thinks we're nuts that we already have the church booked in my small hometown, but being so close to the end of school and holidays I thought it was important to act quickly (plus in my tiny home town- pop. 1500 I don't want to share my day since most of the other brides I know will have the same guests) In the past 2 weeks, I started my DIY centerpieces (cupcake tiers), invitations, and guestbook. I've kinda decided not to do save the dates because of expenses, but I'm planning on some awesome photo post cards for thank yous. On the registry note, we decided it would be best not to register until December/January, that way we won't have to worry about items being discontinued or whatever at that point.
Most importantly I feel like we have developed a vision for the day and have taken good steps in the right direction to accomplish a fantastic day of celebration for our families and friends. I'm so glad that there are other brides that have started so early, it makes me feel a little less crazy!
love!
Katybug I'm like you... I've been itching to get crafting! I've already made my BM's necklaces (I loooooove making jewelry) but am second guessing those... haha. Also I made cookies asking my girls if they'd be in the wedding party :)
I am SO EXCITED to start my centerpieces soon, and figuring out decorations! I will probably do the centerpieces next month, and looking at some room decor this month. But I'm starting registering this month among finishing up booking some people, going to other people's weddings and going to bf's family reunion on every weekend this month! Grr!
I was engaged for 2.5 years but didn't start anything until about the 6 month mark. Big mistake! I wish I would have (or could have, rather, I was in law school so I just didn't have the time) started about a year out. STD and invitations can be done early, as long as you have the date set. And even if you don't, you can start everything else, like designing them, envelopes, liners, embellishments, everything but the actual printing of information. I wish I would have done BM dresses about 9 months out because a lot of places take several months to get them to you. As far as registering, I didn't do it until one month before our first shower. Some places like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn change their inventory frequently, so it can be frustrating to register early. BB&B hardly ever changes though, that is one you could start now. Just do as much DIY stuff as you can (and only things you know you won't change your mind about) early, because when the wedding gets closer there will be a million other things to do!
agreed - never hurts to plan ahead. i have so far: church, reception venue, wedding planner all booked. florist, caterer and photog narrowed down to top two, cake vendor reserved (only one that is any good in my town), and have done a lot of dress shopping, and invitation/STD investigating but no buying yet. i dont plan to do any DIY stuff (would be a hideous disaster knowing me), but i am very cost conscious, so planning ahead is critical.
i agree with a previous poster - dont buy/commit to anything too soon unless you are sure. there's no harm in deciding what you want and then waiting to purchase (assuming it wont get booked or discontinued or whatever).
one word of caution - a bride i know said her biggest regret was purchasing her gown and having her fittings too soon! keep those fittings to the last minute!

I'm anxiously waiting for the 1 year mark to hit because I feel like I can't start my wedding projects yet! For all my date twins out there... what is your timeline like for the next year? Have you started your dress search or any of your wedding projects yet? I'm not really talking about when you're reserving your vendors ect, but more all the "other" stuff- registering, save the dates, diy projects etc.
Is 1 year too early to pick my bridesmaids dresses? I already know what I want but feel like I'm crazy to tell my bridesmaids! I'm just too excited :)
