I send invites for parties out between 3 and 4 weeks ahead. It's a little earlier then most people do probably, but all of our friends have kids and must have sitters, etc.
For engagements, showers etc, I usually send them out 4-6 weeks prior. For the summer, when everyone is super busy, I'd send them at the 5-6 week mark. Esp if your circle of friends is having a big wedding year. We all had to coordinate our dates b/c so many of us are getting married this year
If all your guests are in-town, I would send them out about a month in advance. If a lot of the guests are out-of-town, you might consider sending them out 6 weeks in advance.
