Mr. DG and I were cleaning upstairs the other day and he told me, "I am so ready to be a dad! I can't wait to meet our daughter."
Stupid pregnancy hormones made me cry at that. It was really so sweet!
I think the first time he felt the baby move (we were relaxing in the tub together) was when it really hit him. He teared up, which of course made me cry.
Don't worry, 5 weeks is really early for your husband to start feeling the bond; it'll come! Try this: I signed up with babycentre.ca (or .com) to receive weekly updates on the progress of the baby. It was the highlight of our day to read them together and learn about our little miracle!
I have the opposite problem: my husband feels like a dad but I don't feel like a mom yet! With only 3 days until our due date, I'm guessing that I won't really feel like a mom until our little one comes out and I can actually lay eyes on him or her. Until then, it still doesn't really feel real to me. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one though!
I couldn't vote since we haven't had the baby yet - but I will echo trilby - I don't truly feel like a mom yet (26 weeks). I feel like there is a baby coming, I am really excited and I have an idea of what kind of mom I will want to be - but I don't feel like I am one yet. So I can imagine it would be even harder for men to feel like dads when some of us pregnant girls aren't yet feeling like moms!!
I think my hubby felt like a dad when he saw my 11w US pics. I think it was because the baby actually looked like a human. Before that time, he didn't really see or feel like it was a baby. In fact he hates looking at our first US picture where the baby looks like a "peanut". It kind of grosses him out, lol. I love it, it was my confimation.
I know I felt like a Mom when I started feeling the baby because then it felt more real. It let me know that she was there and I had to take care of her.
The moment spud was born and the doctor put him in FI's arms...it was magic.
FI just stared at him as Spud hollered his brains out, he had the dopiest look on his face.
GAH...I'm ferklempt.
Anyway, dont worry, they come around, pregnancy is such a full body experience for us that we cant help but feel attached from the moment we see that pink line/plus sign.
I'm with Janna and trilby... I think I'm going to have reality overload when/if Lemon ever decides to appear!
I just asked my hubby if he felt like a 'dad' yet. (I'm 28 weeks) He said 'kinda'. I told him about the poll and gave him the options and he said it was a little bit of everything that was making him feel like a dad. I guess for him it feels more real everyday.
Granted we have not started nesting AT ALL. I think if we had baby stuff collecting in the house - or had even registered that might make it real too :) All we have is a onsie and a diaper bag :)

I am 5 weeks pregnant and my husband doesn't feel like a dad yet, although I feel like a mom. How long did it take for your husband/partner to feel like a dad?
