We planned certain things for the nursery before we started TTC... such as- which room will it be? What kind of theme or decor would we like to have? Basic, general stuff like that.
As for actually starting the nursery, well that took MUCH longer! Haha, I'm 29 weeks and it still isn't even finished being painted yet. So, we need to finish painting, then steam clean the carpet, then assemble our nursery furniture, THEN I can finally start washing & putting away the little things we've been collecting. Also, people have been giving us stuff too, so we haven't really spent all that much yet.
Also, my mom & MIL have both been generous enough to offer to host baby showers for me, so we set up a registry for some of the bigger items in hopes that we will receive those or gift cards to put towards those instead of dropping loads of cash at once.
Ha! My daughter just told us a week ago ( a minute after she found out), and she and I have been emailing pictures like crazy. They haven't seen the Dr. yet, but after they go on Thursday, she wants to get started looking around for the bigger pieces too. We're buying the crib for them and that will probably be the first thing they decide on.
She isn't finding out the sex either, so any neutral ideas you've found?
We are waiting until after our gender ultrasound on the 4th. But we've started buying gender neutral clothes and diapers to help cut down the cost a little. Compromising on the crib color means we dont need to buy a new dresser/changing table, or nightstand. So we're looking at crib, possibly a glider, rug, paint and accents. We're having a shower but not including those things on the list because I feel bad about some people spending that much money.
My hubby is making me wait... I wanted to buy the crib last month. And start cleaning out the room too. But, not to be a debbie downer, we have a friend who went in for her 8 week ultrasound and everything was great... They started buying/borrowing & cleaning everything they would need for baby... Went in for 12 week ultrasound and miscarried. So we wanted to make sure that wouldn't happen to us. Everywhere she looks its reminders of the baby.
I found out at the 20 week ultrasound that I was going to have a girl. i still decided to go with the Winnie the pooh theme with light bright green walls. I didn't start to get around to the nursery until I was about 5.5 months pregnant. I just finally got the energy and motivation to do it. Plus I didn't want to buy anything to go into the nursery until it was all painted and ready to go.
@ItWasntMe: We are going with a woodland theme. Something fun and lighthearted. Think adorable owls, Turtles (my favorite animal) and Hedgehogs of course! We figure we can add feminine or masculine touches later on if we want. We already have a crib. We actually bought it before TTC because we knew we would be starting soon and it was such an amazing deal. And a dresser that we used to use in our bedroom in the apt before we moved into a house and could actually use bigger furniture in our bedroom. So most of our big furniture is already there. Now it is just adding a few smaller pieces and accesorizing.
I'm only 15 weeks and I've started thinking about it. (MIL already bought a crib and changing table, kinda bothers hubby and I since it's still so early, plus this means she's assuming she's watching the baby when I go back to work - which she isn't...) Anyway, I've just been looking for ideas - cribs, bedding, colors, etc online. We won't find out the sex for a couple weeks, after we know I'll start to narrow down my ideas.
@Mrs Hedgehog: We are doing animals too! He's painting the walls like a meadow scene... so light blue on the walls & ceiling, two shades of green on the bottom foot or so of the wall like grass, and next he's planning to paint a tree in the corner, and the treetop will cover part of the ceiling as well. Then we'll add in some fun animals- ducks, bunnies, Calvin & Hobbs, monkies, etc...
I really didn't have anything decided until I was about 30 weeks pregnant, bought crib and changing table in that time. I bought artwork but that arrived after my LO did. We painted when I was 38 weeks pregnant. By the next weekend, I had my LO.
My husband and I aren't even TTC until June or July, but we're in the process of purchasing our first home, and we already know which room will be the nursery and what color we want to paint it. (We will be Team Green, so the room will gender neutral but still bright and fun.)
But that's as far as we'll go for now. I'd like to wait until we actually get pregnant and make it throught the first trimester before we really start making any other serious decisions.
@Mrs Hedgehog: We started "planning" around 8-9 weeks, we picked a theme, etc. Deciding on which room wasn't hard since there are only two bedrooms in our house. We picked up the crib at 14 weeks and the bedding set and sotrage just before Christmas. We plan to start painting and putting everything together in march, since I am due June 2. Right now everything is strewn haphazardly around the bedroom/nursery. I want the room mostly finished by May so we don't have to worry if baby comes early.
I'm almost 25 weeks and we're just getting started with painting this week. We ordered the crib and dresser after Chrstmas as it was on sale. I told DH that I don't care when we do it, it just needs to be done before March. (I'm due early May.)
I was too superstitious to plan anything until the first tri was over. I'm 29 weeks now and things are finally kicking into high gear with the nursery.
We decided early on, like before we started TTC, what the nursery would look like depending on the baby's gender. A girl will be Alice in Wonderland and a boy will be pirates.
I can't imagine waiting until the end of the pregnancy! I am worried I wont have the energy later on and I am full of it now! I also know my desire to decorate like crazy will come in waves.... But looking at everybody elses responces it seems like it is still really early...
I started planning a nursery before we were even TTC. However, planning and doing are very different things! At 24 weeks, the future nursery is only partially cleaned out (there's still furniture that needs to be rehomed) and I've only just started buying things to decorate. Painting probably won't be done until I'm 30 weeks, as my parents plan to come in and paint for us while we're away on vacation.
I looked at cribs a couple years ago before we were engaged. lol....I know when we have a baby we will get one of those convertible cribs that turn into a regular bed =D
Aside from that....I got nothing. I look online at baby stuff a lot and have a pinterest board, lmao. No baby though. I probably sound crazy. *backs out of thread slowly*
We got a crib and painted at 13 weeks, we have gotten a rocker this past week and everything except gender accessories/pictures/bedding/rug will be done by 16 weeks.
My husband is a baseball coach and I am very involved in interior decorating. So his season starts late feb and ends early June.. So I wanted to be able to shop around as soon as I know the sex for the perfect decor.
I am 14 weeks and I already have bedding picked out for both sex, cribs, wall decor, etc so when we find out what we are having I can just start ordering. It help passes the time and keeps my family very much involved because they are sending me ideas as well.
I am 21 weeks and we have looked at cribs, etc, but have not bought yet. I have bought a few other baby related things from a friend, and have some clothes. We plan on looking for a little while longer until we buy anything.
But that is just me! I don't see the sense in rushing, personally, and I know that it will make those last few weeks pass more quickly to have something to do.
I'm just over 30 weeks and we're still clearing out the office so we can start setting it up. I'm feeling so behind!!
DH and I have had a theme picked out since before we started TTC lol. Incidently, we are also going with a woodsy/owl theme so I think it's an excellent choice! We started buying early before TTC, I'm a big bargain shopper so I've been picking up gender neutral clothing, some storage items that go with our theme, the bottles I love etc. Sometimes deals are too good to pass up! Recently we picked up the lifefactory glass bottles I love, a sleep sack and some great swaddle wraps for $5 a piece.
In terms of actually painting and setting stuff up, I think that depends on your comfort level. I would probably wait until after the first trimester just to be sure everything was okay, it's one thing to have stuff, it's another to have to look at it all set up if something happens.
im 27 weeks and still havent started putting the room together.. that is a project for this friday.. ha ha hopefully will be able to do a lot in one day.. lol :)
@Mrs Hedgehog: Immediately the moment I found out I was pregnant with my first baby!!! lol
Started thinking about it at 20ish weeks and actually (slowly) doing it by 26 weeks. I'm almost 34 weeks and we are getting close to done.
Um. I'm not even pregnant and dont plan on getting pregnant for another year or more, but I have lists on amazon for baby stuff. Different lists for boy and girl. So I already have most stuff picked out. XD

I know, I know, there is plenty of time to set the nursery up before the baby gets here. We are only 9 weeks and still have a pretty far way to go. I am of the midset that it is better to slowly gather things so it doesn't hit your wallet all at once. And my parents are going to help paint murals (or designs) on the walls so we need time for them to do that. I really want to get started soon and I know I am crazy for it. We already have a theme picked out. It is very gender neutral and very easy to adapt to add feminine or masculine touches.
When did you start planning and setting up your nursery? What made you decide it was time?
