I'll be TTC in July. I talked to my Gyn (OB for when I had my son) and he told me to stick to a women's vitamin with extra folic acid. The materity vitamins have a lot of iron in them and you don't need that until you become pregnant (unless you're anemic.) I take a multivitamin and 4mg of folic acid. I'm on a big dose of folic acid because my sister was born with a cleft lip.
My doc told me to start them 2 months prior to TTC. Since I had no idea when we'd start TTC, I started as soon as she told me that; it's been about 5 months now, and just got off the pill.
I take Materna; which is basically a multivitamin with folic acid and another thing..
We're not trying to conceive at all - I just take them because my OBGYN told me they were the best vitamin a woman could take.
It won't harm you to take them now. They're good for you anyways :)
Hi Bees!
My hubby and I were married in June (yay!) and just moved into our first home (more yay!) LOL. We are hoping to enjoy being newlyweds for a wee while before TTC. We have discussed little ones and the goal is to 'pull the goalie' next summer sometime (Aug/Sept 2012).
Is it too early to go on prenatal vitamins? My iron is naturally low but otherwise healthy. Given that it is just shy of a year later, is it too early? I have purchased an over the counter pre-natal vitamin but don't want to start taking them if it's too soon or could cause any issues.
Any advice from fellow bees?
I only started taking them at 6 months pregnant. I'll start as soon as I find out I'm pregnant if I have another baby. =)
I started prescripton prenatals 6 months prior to ttc. I think I did store brand two months before that.
My doctor had told me to start November for TTC at the end of January. I'm thinking I'll start soon based on the PPs! why not right?
We started TTC at the beginning of this year, but we were NTNT last year and I've been taking something with folic acid (either a regular multivitamin or just folic acid) since November last year. I just started prenatals this month and only because I found some on sale for the same price as the regular women's multivitamins.
I started at 6 weeks pregnant. because thats when I had my first OB appointment and they presribed some for me. Personall because of all the Iron I would only take them when I know I am actually pregnant and not before.
I started over the counter prenatals 1 year before TTC. I like the benefits it had on my hair and nails!

I have read that you should start taking prenatal vitamins anywhere from 1-6 months before TTC. I've also heard that they're good for your hair, skin and nails although others say this is a myth. I'm just wondering when people actually started taking them?
We're going to start TTC in about 4 months, and I got some at Wegman's just to try. I'm going to talk to my doctor about them at my appointment next week. So far, I feel great but I'm not sure whether it's the vitamins or not. I feel like I have more energy and I'm in a better mood, but this could be because the sun has finally come out for the first time in months!
