I've been slowly plugging away at my DIY for almost the past year. The first thing that I did was to design and make a sample invitation. Then I slowly made the rest but only had to do 50. There were lots of parts to my invitations.
These are the DIY that I have finished
I would say go for it and start. I have not been stressed at all about my wedding. Then you don't overwhelm yourself when it gets closer to your wedding and you have other things to worry about. Just don't start something and then change your mind.
It really depends on how decisive you are. If you're the kind of person who tends to decide on one thing and stick to it, the only limit on DIY is the availability of storage space. However, if you're likely to change your color scheme a dozen times before the wedding, you may want to hold off on DIY.
I'm in nursing school now and my wedding is in May 2013 and you've done more than my logistically but I've already started to DIY. I know where I'm getting married and I've been there once but my fiance wants to go look at it and he refuses to unless it's May which is so frustrating (He seriously thinks I can plan everything and be in nursing school in about three months time-so he thinks I'm insane for planning now)
Anyway, I've made about 4 pomander balls out of tissue paper and I've wrapped the bottles we are using for our centerpieces and I have some general ideas about everything else.
Actually right now, I just got out of clinical and have to go back in about 2 hours for more work so I'm trying to decide if I want to go check out partycity for some stuff or take a nap. lol.
Feel free to send me a message if you need some help/advice for nursing school! (After this semester, I have three more left.)

I am positively antsy. My wedding isnt until June 1st....2013. I know as far as engagements go, thats really not all that long. I have the reception venue booked, I'm in contact with the ceremony venue, and I've already done one cake tasting. I did mention I'm antsy, right?
Well, if things work out the way I want them to (which they rarely do), I'll be in nursing school in the fall, and I'm terrified I'll be elbows deep in textbooks and pharmaceutical pocket guides that I wont have space in my head for tulle and buttercream.
Summary: I want to get started DIY!
How soon is too soon, bees? What simple DIY projects were you able to start pretty early?
