I used it right away. You could use it socially before you have officially changed it with anyone.
I've been married two months now and we've just received our wedding certificate (it was long because this is the second version, the first had mistakes... plus, it's issued by the Dominican Republic and sent here by mail). Anyway...
Until I get all the paperwork done, I will not be using by married name for official things. I have to get the certificate translated and then take care of the paperwork. So maybe another 2 weeks. I have been using it for new magazines subscriptions and activities, just because I'm excited to use it.
I started using it socially outside of work immediately. Although, many times, I wasn't used to it, so I still introduced myself has "[maiden name], oops! I'm sorry, I just got married, it's actually [new name]."
It took me about a month before I legally switch everything over, and I started using it for everything, including work (for some reason, I was hesitant to start using it at work right away - but I think that had a lot to do with the fact that I'm the only married female in the office, and just felt weird about it).
So the other day I really jumped the gun and signed my new last name on a UPS delivery machine thing....the UPS guy was like "I thought your last name was _______" And I was like "ummm, we got married" and UPS man said "I thought you weren't getting married 'til this summer" and I stood there scared that some government offical UPS man was going to arrest me for illegal last name usage or something. I just started slurring my words and I was like "ehh, gotta go!" and closed to door. Crap, why does the UPS man know so much about my life?!?! What's he going to think when he starts delievering wedding gifts? hahahah I'm so stupid.
@virginia- lmao! that is hilarious. and why DOES he know so much about your life? I'd have just said you just got LEGALLY married but your wedding reception and ceremony with friends is in august ;)
@spaniel will there be any problem getting your diploma or your bar certificate in your married name if you don't change it now? That would be my only concern. Both mine are in my maiden name obviously and it kind of sucks that my name wont match anymore.
i used it socially right away. but you have to be careful about that- my mom gave me a check made out to mr. and mrs. new last name as part of our wedding gift, and i told her that i hadn't changed my name yet (so we had to wait to deposit it until i did). her response was "but you changed it on facebook." yes, because facebook is real life.
lol! I deposited wedding gifts into our joint account, and I think banks are pretty used to that, because they didn't give me any trouble when they were made to "Myname and Hisname Newlast"... it might have been harder if it was just Myname Newlast, I guess!
@corgitales: since I'll keep using my full name professionally (which will still have my maiden name in it), I'm not too worried about what the diploma and bar cert say, although of course it would be better if I get it done sooner. I guess I'll just have to see how quickly we get the certificate? I'm not sure I'll have it in time to get the proof I need to change it with the school before graduation, unfortunately. :(
I got my marriage license about a week after getting married. I was able to change my bank accounts almost right away but I waited on my drivers license because we were moving and I didn't want to pay for a new license twice.
@MissAsB: wow, that's fast! They told us to expect it to take 6-8 weeks after they get the license! (I graduate in... 5 weeks!) Luckily our officiant sent it the Monday after the wedding!
@spaniel: Wow that's a long time! Maybe yours is longer since California has a lot of people?
it took a while for the papers to come from Jamaica (6-8 wks?), so once they were in, i took a day to change my name. I didn't go by my new name until that point, unless i was being addressed with my hubby (like at a hotel or something, checking in).
Right after all the paperwork made it official! & even then when i sign for ups things I use my old last name since its shorter.

Did you start right after you got married, or after you did all the official paperwork?
I ask because I'm planning to change my name, but I'm also planning to sit for the Bar in July and it seems like it'd be a lot easier to just start using my new name after I have the documentation to change it officially with them as well... but on the other hand, I just want to get the process moving already! :)
