Wedding is in the beginning of July, and Shower is in the end of May.. I was thinking to register in March, that's 2 months in advance. Invites will be sent out in April, so I woudl definitely register before invited are sent out obviously. My wedding book is telling me to register in January (6 mo prior to wedding, 4 mo prior to shower). Is that too early? I feel like if we registered, and then they brought out spring/summer stock, then everything I registered for would not be in the store.

You can register whenever you want (I registered really early), but you'll want to be checking no matter what to make sure that items are still in stock. If you don't register for seasonal items you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Do you know whether anyone intends to throw an engagement party for you? I realize it's not necessarily customary to buy gifts for that, but if you're having one, you might want to have at least a barebones registry set up before then. Otherwise, I think it's fine to not worry about it until March, especially if that's prior to when the invites for your shower are going out.

In my case, we registered really early because I want to have time to futz with it before people start making purchases. And my fiance and I have radically different taste, so there was guaranteed to be a lot of discussion!

My wedding planner told me three months in advance. too early and you run the risk of things selling out of stock. i would think your family would want to start buying your presents as seen as they get the invite.

I am getting married at the end of June.  Stores suggest this early probably because if you don't have your place now then you need quite a bit of stuff and it takes a while to register for it all.   Especially if your man is with you, they usually don't last longer than 2 hours each visit :)

    good luck!!!

we have already registered (at 2 out of 3 places) and we are 10 months out. We did this because people were sending us engagement gifts and then asking about holiday gifts. I'm just keeping an extra eye on our registry in case anything is out of stock closer to our day

I'd like to be registered by the time I'm 6 months out, just to have it out of the way.

I've heard it's better not to register for "seasonal" merchandise that is likely to be out of stock at some point before the wedding.  It seems like if you register for "core" items that are always around you should be ok.

I registered almost immediately after the engagement. That way if people wanted to purchase a gift for the engagement party, there was a list available. But, mostly because it was something I could get started on (shopping without spending money!). I just check on it every couple of weeks to keep it up-to-date.

We registered about a year before our wedding, but that was largely at the insistance of our parents, who wanted to buy us engagement gifts.

We registered for a few seasonal things, but found that we either got them at the shower with no problem, or we just deleted them and replaces them before the wedding if they were out of stock.

Really, register whenever you want. I don't think there's a set rule.

prettyflowers we did the same thing. I actually bought our bedding myself because it was being discontinued.  I don't mind that though, and I'm using it now since I bought it myself.

It really depends on the kinds of things you are registering for.  FI and I did ours super early (like a year out!) but nothing we want is seasonal - so the in stock issues aren't bad.  If you keep an eye on your registry, you should be fine.

I think we registered in February for my April shower and May wedding.  We didnt' want to register too far in advance, in case the things on our regsitry went out of stock.  We didn't  have an engagement party or anything, so it wasn't an issue.

We're registering for pretty basic 'core' stuff, nothing seasonal, so we just did our registry one weekend in late November when we had time to spare - that's between 5 and 6 months before our wedding.  I'll keep an eye on it though in case anything is discontinued!  It took a lot more time than we thought, so I'd say start early and you can always modify later!

we registered very early because people wanted to buy us engagement presents. but then you do have to check and make sure stuff doesn't go out of stock. we had an engagement party over thanksgiving weekend, and my fmil wanted to get us our dishes. they were all on sale and going out of stock soon, so she went to a million targets to collect them all. i felt awful! the same thing happened with our shams, but i saw that they were on sale and i scooped them up before they went out of stock, because someone had already bought us our quilt. but i am glad we registered early because people did buy us a crap load off of our registry for our engagement party.
