I think it depends on your area. I know the woman I booked said I got her last weekend in May, and that was about three weeks ago. But I did hear back from others who were available.
I would start looking now. I just booked my hair and makeup (yesterday!) and my wedding is in September. I started checking around just to get prices and found that several artists were already booked. That being said, I live in a major city where things seem to get booked far in advance.
My wedding is in 7 weeks and I don't have anyone... haha. You can ALWAYS find someone. And I feel like the farther out you go, the more likely it is for them to bail.
I think it depends on where you live and who you want. If you are picky or have someone in particular in mind, I would book asap. I booked my makeup artist about 7 months in advance and she said she was getting pretty booked up for the summer at that point.
@Annebanan: Totally depends on where you live I think, and also how picky you are. I am vvveeerrryyy picky about hair/makeup so I want to find something I really love. I live in Chicago where people seem to plan their wedding 10 years in advance. My wedding is in November and I have my first hair/makeup trial next week. Maybe just start looking around at reputable MUA's in your area and see if they are still available the day of your wedding, so you can get an idea as to whether you should start looking to book someone now or if you have time to wait.
I'd start looking now. I've been on the hunt since January and have had no such luck. Photos are coming up at the end of this month and I'm panicking a bit.

Hi bees!
I need to know when should I hire a make-up artist? I want to have a professional (MAC or some other make up consultants) make up my face for the big day as I HATE the way I do my make up. How long in advance do I need to book an artist, or am I too late to even really find one for that day? Please and thank you for the help! =)
