I couldn’t help myself but start shopping right away.  I wound up buying my dress in Nov 07 for a Sept 08 wedding.  I only purchased it because it was being discontinued and I got the sample for cheap.

If I had it to do over again would have waited to shop, because there have been some dresses I’ve seen since that I think are nicer.  But I don’t want to buy a 2nd dress, so I try to avoid looking at dresses in magazines and such.

I think 1 year in advance is plenty of time for you to find a dress.

If your maids are picking their own stuff they can start shopping whenever they want- unless the guidelines you’re setting depend on your dress.

From quotes I received when looking for my dress (my wedding is Sept 09, but was postponed from Sept. 08) there was anywhere from a 3 month to 9 month turnaround time.  Dependent on brand name, amount of dress handmade, imported, etc.  And I was told to leave an additional month for alterations.  I guess ideally start looking 12 months before to allow you plenty time to shop around and have a worse case scenario on order time.

For bridesmaids, I’d say wait until you get your dress.  You don’t want to end up with clashing dresses if you suddenly change your vision b/c of your dress.

congrats on your engagement!

i’d say to just enjoy being engaged before running out and shopping and buying stuff for (potential) DIY stuff, etc…

the dress???  take your time – dont rush buying something you like – just take your time for something you love… i’d further advise to go dress shopping alone or with one other person – having too many people is confusing and will get annoying ikf you have all these opinions in your ear – you cant really focus yon our own thoughts…

since your BMs are choosing their own style, it’s not going to really matter what dress you choose since you wont be going for a matchy matchy look and feel, you’re going more for a coordinated look, kwim??

happy shopping!!

I purchased my dress in February 2008, and my wedding is in June 2008. As long as you have plenty of time for any alterations you may need, and any time that may be needed to order the dress (if they have a size that is way off from your own size), you could get it closer to the wedding. If I were you, though, I’d start looking asap. Get to know what you really want in a dress. Don’t buy the dress too soon (unless you really KNOW it’s the one) because you may end up regretting it later… Take your time and the dress will come to you. You’ll know it when you do find it, though.

Good luck!
