Oh Quiche you read my mind! Now that I'm in school AND work full time, it is really really tough to get my butt there.
When I only worked....i worked from 7-330 and either worked out from 4:15-5:15 or looked up a class I was going to take (say at 4:45) and either flexed my schedule so I could go right after work or really made sure I went after I came home (change right into gym clothes for starters and make sure I eat a proper pre-gym snack).
I have no problem going when I'm not in classes...but man, if I did that, by the time I got home every day, watched a lecture, showered, and ate dinner, it'd be 7:30pm and then I only have like, 2-3 hours to do all the stuff around the house (pack a lunch, laundry, feed the cats, put clothes away, grocery store, etc) and study and/or do homework.
On a side note, I used to go 4-5 days/week, 1-1.5 hours each time and my nutritionist is trying to get me to understand the mentality of 3 days a week, 45 minutes each time.
It's finals week, so the only exercise i've gotten is "open mouth, insert food" unfortunately
I work out every other morning at 5:30 am. I travel to work an hour and back an hour. There is no way I can go after work. I say try to go in the morning on your off physical therapy days, but save one day to rest and weekend sleep in and try to go later in the morning. If you really want something, whatever your goal is, you will make it happen! Good luck!
You girls are crazy! I cannot get up a minute earlier so usually I go to the gym at night. When school was in session, I was going after my class on Monday and Wednesday so class got out at 8:30 went to the gym on campus and did cardio for about 30 minutes so I left by about 9:10-9:20.
Oooo it'd be really helpful if everyone can post a schedule of their day! Like here's mine for the upcoming winter break (no school! Goodbye 10 post-wedding pounds...)
Up at 5:30am
Work 7-330pm
Gym 415-515pm
home at 530
quick shower/dinner at 6
6:30-10:30--nightly stuff like laundry, pack a lunch, set out clothes, other necessary things, tv, etc.
I go straight from work or I won't go at all. Sometimes I run in the morning when it's warmer out, but not now.
I have classes two days a week from 6-8:30 so I either don't go on those days, work out at home in the morning, or hit the gym quickly after class.
A day's schedule without school would look like this:
6:45 - up for work
7:45 - leave for work
9:00-5:00 - work
6:00 - gym
8:00 - dinner, relaxing, etc.
FI gets up at 5am to be at his office by 6am, so I usually roll out of bed leave with him at 5:45am and take the dogs out. Since I'm up, that's when I usually head to the gym. Waiting till after work gives me waaaaay too much time to come up with an excuse. We're fortunate enough to have a great gym in our building which def helps me get there.
I also consider myself lucky to have a 1.3 mi walk each way to andd from work. For those mornings I just can't get on the treadmill, I feel better knowing I at last have that (even when we were apartment shopping, I refused to look at buildings too close to my office). Also, if I don't make it to the gym, I'll tack on a few more blocks to the dogs' AM & PM walks.
I've found the best thing to do is schedule it like a class or your PT appts. You have no trouble getting up for those at 5:30am, try viewing your workouts that way. Good luck!!
@twalila: Good point! FI and I also both walk A LOT for our commutes!
Good idea ejs!
Here's mine...
Up at 5
Workout 5-6:15
Work 8-4:30
MWF Errands 4:30-5:30 (live out of town, so have to fit them in when I can) T & TH 5-6 workout with a friend! Our version of girls' night!
Home at 6 or 7
6or 7ish - bedtime Supper. And do all the crap that makes me wish I didn't have a commute eating up my evening :). During the summer this is gardening time! Oh summer... how I miss you...
I need to start going and I have nearly no excuse - the gym is in our building.. or more specifically, down the hall from my apartment.
Here's my schedule:
6am - up
7:40 leave for work (it takes me about 1 hour to shower & get ready, the rest of that time is admittedly putzing around the house)
9:00 arrive at work
5:15-5:30 leave work
6:30-6:45 arrive home
7:30 ish dinner/die on the couch
@ejs - Yay for finals week being over! I had one on Monday & 2 yesterday...now I am done!!
I think BlondieBee has the right idea - I need to stick to a regular schedule of getting up and going, regardless of the weather :/ I hurt my lower right back (sacro joint) in May & it still isn't back to normal! Ugh...so frustrating!
Daily Routine (PT days):
Up at 5:30, shower & get everything ready for work
6:30 - 7:30 PT
8:00 - Home, change & back out of the door to catch the train (It's about a 3 city block walk to the train & 2 more from the train to the office - not a lot)
Work until 5:00
5:30 - home
When I have night classes though, they go until 8:30 or 9:30, depending on the class! And there really is no way to work out after that - I'd be up all night!
Isn't it sad that it's seemingly impossible to find 45 minutes in the day?!
Yeah looking at my schedule this way really shows I have to just do it in the morning. At night I'm famished when I get home, want dinner, and then dinner just removes ALL motivation to do anything.
My schedule makes me look like a loser! Hopefully I can get a job next year and this will change!
6am: Wake up when alarm goes off, make sure husband gets out of bed then fall back asleep
12am: On Monday and Wednesday spinning, on Tuesday and Thursday pilates
5:30-8:20pm: On Tuesday and Thursday class at school
I'm hoping that I can find a place to take classes if I go back to work since a lot of the classes at school are when I would be in class so I can't take them!
It's all about making time - if you are looking for time you are never going to find it!
Make it be a part of your day instead of an extra!
I am with some others that CANNOT wake up early to work-out I would rather sleep and so I do it on the way home from school which can vary from 4-7:30!
Speaking of which I am going to spinning for 5:30!
Good Luck!
I get up T 5.30 every weekday morning,
-gym 6am-7pm
-work either 8-4 or 10-7
-Uni on 8-4 days is 5-8
- during Uni Hols try to do exercise at nigh as well.
It is hard to get up at 5.30 but I just have too
@diorable: Yeah, it's kind of nice in the aspect of not having to work but it really isn't good in the money area of our lives. We are doing okay but we pretty much have no free money to go out to dinner or get fancy face cream or anything.
@MissASB: It's okay. We both work and we don't have money for any of that ;o)
You could exercise at home at night like crunches, pushups, dips etc. maybe even buy some free weights. and go for a run.
Ugh... I know what you mean. When I was a student (and living only a few minutes away from school) working out was so much easier since I had some flexibility in my schedule. Now my schedule is:
6AM wake up for work
6:45 AM out the door to make it to the vanpool for my hour-long commute to work
8AM-4:45 PM work
4:45-6 commute home
6 PM -- Workout if I'm not so exhausted and hungry that I just want to eat dinner and crawl into bed. This is a major uphill battle. I'm hoping that when the days get longer again in the spring I will start riding my road bike in the evenings again...
I can't get up in the morning (even worse in the winter!) and when I tried to go to the gym after work, I would get home around 10 pm. I tried working out at home after work to cut down on travel time but get home too late these days to want to do anything. At this point, I only end up working out on the weekends, if at all. I'd like to start exercising in the morning because otherwise it never gets done, but I sleep straight through all my alarms in the morning and our apartment gets no natural light. Any of you morning exercisers have any tips for how to become a morning person??
Ugh. I am SUPPOSED to work out at 6am Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and then whenever on Saturday and Sunday. In reallity, I get to the gym on the weekdays MAYBE twice, then usually skip a weekend workout. Needless to say, I've only lost three pounds since I started trying.
I've been telling everyone I am going to run in a race my work sponsors, and I have a goal time. Hopefully, come January and only six weeks left, the fear of embarrassing myself will kick in.
But I hear you, getting up early several times is tough. I just can't figure out how to convince my body that bed at 10, up at 5 is the new regime. I have a hard time falling asleep before 11, and I don't feel "ready" to leave bed until 7. I'm hoping that my upcoming Christmas trip back east will help me reset my internal clock earlier.
My alarm goes off at 4:30 every morning and I make my way to the gym by 5 am unless I have a late shift at work, which means I get to sleep in until 6 am. Gettting up at the same time every morning really makes it a lot easier. That being said, with the snow and below zero wind chills we've been having added to a warm and cuddly boy being in bed next to me, getting out of bed hasn't been as easy this winter! If I sleep in, working out after work is my punishment because I hate the chaos of the gym after work plus I just want to go home.
I need to get back to working out in the mornings! I did it for a little and felt so much better but the past couple months I haven't been able to drag myself out of bed. When I don't go in the morning I spend sll day at work thinking about whether I will go to the gym when I get home. Usually I don't, like the rest of you all I want to do when I get home is have dinner, shower and relax. I just need to get a routine going again. I have so much trouble starting but I'm usually okay after awhile. Although, sometimes if I work out in the morning I'm not truly awake until about half way through!
For those of you who say that they can't get up in the morning, money is a great motivator... Ever since I joined up to a boot camp, I have gotten out of bed 3 days a week at 430 am to make sure I get my workout in. Since it is so expensive, I make sure I am there.

Wow i just came back to check this....boy do I feel pathetic. It takes me 20 minutes to get to work every day! I don't know what I'd do if i had an hour+ commute every day.
@EJS: It succckkkks. But it is not as bad when you're taking the subway/bus because you can read/do work/whatever. I would HATE driving that long to work.
I'm in the same boat of not being motivated to get up in the mornings-- at all!! It's really the best time for me to fit a work out in though. I've heard that anything you do for 21 days becomes a habit... but so far I havent even made it to 1!!!!
@pinkmonkee - I wish that worked for me! I thought it would and that the knowledge of how much the gym membership cost would keep me going to the gym but it didn't. After a few months where we didn't go more than once a month, I ended up cancelling it instead. In hindsight, probably should have picked a closer gym, but still don't think I would get up for it.
@captainsgirl - I heard the same thing about 21 days to make a habit, and didn't get very far!
It has to be right before or right after work or else it doesnt happen.
The gym pretty much doesn't happen for me anymore. I canceled my membership a couple of months after starting work :( I get to work at 9:30 and end around 9-11 on most days, so don't have time or energy for it at all. I think a lot of you guys are more disciplined than me!
However, I do walk to work 30-35min each day so hopefully that counts a little? I am pretty religious about this - snow, cold, rain, I'll still be walking to work.
My fiance and I go at night, but our gym is within steps of our apartment. We usually eat dinner around 8 and then work out sometime between 9 and 10. Then come back, shower, and bed by midnight. Occasionally we do two a days and go in the morning at 7 as well, but we don't always have the time for that.
I was doing much better at this when I went straight from work, so I might have to start doing that again because going in the morning is NOT working for me...lately I'm lucky to go 2 - 3x a week!

I am REALLY struggling with this lately. 2 or 3 days a week, I am up at 5:30 and off to physical therapy. The other 4 or 5 days, I cannot drag my booty out of bed in the morning to work out. I also work full time & take classes at night.
Also, when it is -20 out...the last thing I am going to do is get up and walk to the gym in the freezing cold darkness!
For all of you busy bees out there, when do you work out?
