we're having ours any day now (5 months before) just because the weather got nicer and we're tan and lost a little weight:-). I think you can have it any time before.......if you want to do it for newspapers, check their requirements; or if you want to use the engagement photos at your wedding, check with your photographer with how long it will take.....but I think you could do it the day you got engaged, or a month before the wedding - whatever fits your needs.
Our wedding photographer is giving us a free hour shoot anytime before the wedding - she is fabulous and says it will help her get used to us, and us get used to her. I've seen other engagement shoots cost as much as $500 (tops).
PS - our total photographer --- which includes (free) engagement shoot, 10 hours of wedding photography with 2 shooters, unlimited shots, website, all rights to photos, 2 albums, and some other things, its less than $4000...in NYC. This was the cheapest (good) photographer we could find, but it varies drastically from location to location.
Photographer prices vary depending on where you are located. We just did our engagement photos a couple of weeks ago and they were included with our photography package. You can get engagement pictures any time before your wedding. I wanted to get ours done early, so we could send a picture of us with the save-the-dates.

My mom has a photog friend so it'll probably be cheaper than normal. I want the rights to the photos... I don't want prints. IDK how much that is.
We had a free ($250) engagement shoot as long as we donated to the local animal shelter. Our wedding is next May but i really wanted to send out save the dates before I finished the invites. They next photshoot will be after the wedding with the entire party.
We did ours this passed Sunday. Our photographer suggested doing it a little closer to the wedding, so that we'd be comfortable with them. However, when I told them I wanted to use the pics for STDs to be sent in August/September, they told us end of May/beginning of June would be best :)
Our session was included in our package, which was a steal at $950! Their prices have now doubled. And I definitely think that prices are a regional thing.
I'm with OttawaBride2011 -- our photog recently went up on prices, but our package was $2600 total and included the following::
-Engagement session (or trash the dress, or boudoir, we chose engagement)
-CD and Slideshow w/music of engagement photos
-2 photogs day of the wedding, unlimited photos, unlimited time,
-2 parents small photo books
-1 large coffee table book
-600 4x6 prints in a custom box
-CD and slideshow w/music of wedding photos
We got engaged last June, did our engagement shoot in October and got married in May. Our books are currently in the mail to us. :) Was very pleased!!!
Ours was included in our package. Just did them last month!
We are paying $7,000 and are getting 2 hour engagement shoot (we got 175 photos on DVD and 2 8x10 photos), 10 hours of coverage on our wedding day (we get all the photos on DVD, I THINK a certain amount of prints, 2 parent albums, and our album). This is also for 2 photographers- they are a husband wife team. So, yea, not cheap, but this is NYC area, we get a ton, and they are amazingly talented.
I am paying $3000 for my photos and I am getting:
-full-resolution disc of all images
-7 hours on wedding day
-engagement session
-free trash the dress if i choose
this was one of the cheapest, smallest packages.
@jgoulart: how did you get such an amazing deal? you are getting SO much for the price you are paying! wowwww!!
We are doing ours Sept 30th and our wedding is Sept 4, 2011. Our photographer was $6,000 and included them in our package.
I realize this thread is old but if anyone is looking for an engagement shoot, I'm booking G.E, Masana for my photography becasue he's ridiculously talented. He still may be giving away angagement photos no strings attached, he was offering that on his website, www.gemasana.com
Good info! Thanks for posting the link, Alicia1027, I checked G.E. Masana out and yep he's still looking for volunteer couples to build his portfolio and giving away a free picture.
