(Closed) when do you need to tell your boss?

I told my boss at 9 weeks because I’d been taking time off for appointments. I’d had 2 ultrasounds and heard the heartbeat by that point, so I felt comfortable telling.

I’ve had two pregnant staff members. Both told me pretty much once they found out, I was of course asked to keep it a secret. Which I did. I take care of their rosters and they go to me before higher management. They both spoke to the other managers at 12 weeks, then we got HR involved. 


I have a good relationship with most of my staff and probably helps that I’m a female. Could easily speak to me, I guess. If we do kids soon, I’ll have to say something early on to the people I answer too. Then make it public at 12 weeks.

I told my boss at 12 weeks- because I was clearly starting to show.

I told my boss at 8 weeks, I had an ultrasound and heard the heartbeat at that point. My job is very project based, and my manager and VP plan our schedules for the year by assigning us to specific projects, and I didn’t want them to spend a lot of time scheduling me on projects, then having to rearrange the schedule because I’d be on maternity leave. I’ll get HR involved in the next few weeks (I’m 17 weeks).

I told my boss when I was 13-14 weeks.  I probably could’ve waited even longer since I wasn’t showing yet, but I felt like the stress of keeping it a secret was starting to eat at me.   I told my boss first, before HR.  I probably met with them around 15 weeks or so. 

As far as who you should meet with first, I know at my work it didn’t really matter but I personally just felt like it was better to make sure my boss knew before anyone else.

I told my boss pretty early.  I had to go in 3 times to have blood drawn to test hormone levels and had an u/s at 5 weeks, so I was missing several mornings of work.  She knew we were TTC anyway.  I only “told” HR when I asked about maternity leave.  I don’t think there’s really a specific rule about who you tell first.  I’m just pretty close with my boss, and she sits 5 feet from me, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep my mouth shut about it anyway lol
