I waited until almost a whole week after AF was expected. I had some symptoms (cramping, fatigue, etc) that were very similar to pre-AF, so I waited to test. You could probably test as early as a day or two before.. just get the better tests from the grocery store.
My husband and I decided that we will only take a test a couple days to a week past when AF is suppose to be here. Given that because I keep thinking I might be that it might skew the dates a bit.
Unfortunately we have yet to gotten that far. :( First month AF came right on time and second month she was a day late.
Hopefully this month!
I think it's best to wait until your expected period is at least a day late (if you're regular, that is- if you're not, I think it's best to wait until a day after the longest time you've gone without a period is past. If your cycle is anywhere from 28-35 days, I think you should wait until day 36, even though you could technically be late on day 29). That being said, I usually don't follow my own advice and take them ridiculously early, where it's pretty much a waste of a test. I can't help it, I'm impatient.
I am going on a big vacation tomorrow (7 days before the end of a supposedly 35 day cycle). But, I'm not regular since only went off BCP end of January (when on pill it was 28/29 days and first one off pill was 35 days) Slightly bad timing because of course I will feel guilty having pina coladas on vacation. We decided, however, I'm going to live life normally until I get a BFP. Otherwise, I will be annoyed and regretful, etc.
I wait until a day or two before I expect AF. Any earlier and I'd worry too much it would end up being a chemical pregnancy, and I'd have gotten excited for nothing.
I took mine 5 or 6 days before because I was impatient, and I got a faint positive. You could try one, but if you get a negative just know that it COULD be too early. Then try again if AF doesnt come
I waited till I thought I was about 3 days late (I was like you - going to a wedding and wanted to know if I should drink).
I think a lot of ppl get impatient and test before they've actually missed and then they get a false negative - it seems like a waste of money to test too early because then you have to test multiple times.
If you're super concerned go ahead and test but like I said you could be pregnant and get a false negative and then you still have the same problem of not knowing if you can drink. I'd say just don't drink to excess if you're concerned.
I just went to the dollar store and got a bunch of tests and tested before the weekends if I knew I might have something to drink. No harm in testing more often, it's only $1.
I waited until the day before it was supposed to come. I wanted to wait another day, but just got too impatient.
Since my body likes to play tricks on me, by making me have pregnancy-like symptoms, I tested a day a couple days before.
HOWEVER, when I was a week late (figures) I tested when I was due for my period and then several times after (all negatives, btw). When I called the dr, I ended up starting a few hours later!
The best time to test is when you're due for AF, but you can also test as soon as ten days after ovulation. IF you know when you ovulated (aka using an ovulation prediction test/kit) then you SHOULD be ok, but it CAN take up to 14 days (or is it 18?) for the hsg to show up.
usually AF has been on time 
but last month my AF was very light spotting the first 3 days and then normal the second 2 days :( so i never tested.

Curious! For those who are expecting or TTC, when did you/do you test?...trying not to think too much about it, but of course am wondering.
