Remember when you were little and you would tell people what you wanted to be when you grow up? Now that I'm grown up, I thought I went into my dream job and have discovered that I'm absolutely miserable and I should have done something else. Now I want to play again!
When i grow up, I want to be an elementary school teacher!
When I was a kid I wanted to be an archaeologist. And then I tried it when I was 15 and realized A) I hate dirt, and B) I don't have enough patience for it. Now, when I grow up I'd like to be Martha Stewart :) Well, minus the cleaning thing, I don't have the knack for that, LOL!
:) I'm in college right now and I used to think I wanted to be a school teacher...BUT I'm in college to be a nurse and I'm so glad that I am :)
Hmmm.... An astronaut, I grew up near NASA, but then discovered I could never space walk because I'm too tall. A vet, a marine biologist (Flipper and Free Willy anyone?), a science teacher, an archaeologist, an anthropologist, psycoloigist, doctor, and now I'm in nursing school! I like science can you tell?
I wanted to be a JAG in the USMC. I've adjusted that goal to practicing law with a specialization in EDD and ESI as a civilian when I grow up. :)
I remember when I was a kid we did an assignment in school where we drew out what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wanted to be a teacher, doctor, or cashier, haha.
I've worked as a cashier for a summer job and now I'm a professor in laboratory medicine, so I've kind of stayed true to my childhood dream, lol!
My dreams were totally whacked out when I was little. I desperatley wanted to be an airline stewardess since I thought it was like the coolest job ever being able to travel all over. Now that I'm older, that doesn't nearly appeal to me (traveling does but not waiting on grumpy passengers). My current dream is to become an event planner. After our wedding I'm going to enroll in some online classes and get the ball rolling!
When I was a lot younger I thought I wanted to be a marine biologist. Then I realized that I'm kinda claustrophobic and I don't like science that much.
Then I wanted to be a lawyer. Which now I am. And it sucks.
Now?
I think when I grow up I want to be Pioneer Woman lol. I want to spend all day cooking, taking pictures, giving stuff away, and blogging. Sounds good to me. :)
I wanted to be an astronaut and a paleontologist. I became a lawyer. Now I just want to be independently wealthy, idle rich.
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist. And I became one! I have 2 degrees in Marine Biology. Now i'm using my environmental knowledge to develop antibiotics.
Now I think I want to be a photographer, though! haha
Oh lord, let's see what did I want to be when I was a kid...
Vet
Actress
Singer
Painter
Surgeon
Teacher
Archaeologist
Marine Biologist
...
The actress/singer dreams sort of came true; I do a fair amount of musicals, but if I actually did it for a living I think I'd start to hate it. But I went to grad school for forensic speech science, so now I want to sit in a room with earphones on analyzing people's voices all day, lol.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a Veterinarian.
Now I think I'd love to be an Architect.
That's not gonna happen so I'll be happy to fall into either the Graphic Design field or the Librarian field--anything associated really.
I wanted to be ballerina, but when I was 12 I injured my ankle. Then I dived into piano which I played since I was 7. And got waitlisted at one of the hardest schools to get into (and when you get in, you stay, so the waitlist was pointless). Now I work in Radio Advertising. Quite the difference.
@bakerella: I'm in an anthropology program and I still hate arch. I blame the main archeology professor here- she's under qualified, perverse, and crazy to boot.
Middle school through now has been a bit of a range:
large animal vet (I hate cows and needles)
lawyer (law school? blech.)
horse trainer (I don't want to deal with crazy clients after dealing with them as a rider)
archeologist specializing in the Levant (comment to bakerella)
something in museums-> museum registrar/collections management
I would love to work in collections management in a museum that at least has some military history but in all likelihood I'll end up as a catchall at a smaller history museum since most places can't afford to higher a dedicated collections department.
When I was little, I wanted to be an actress/model/fashion designer which were all unrealistic because I am barely 5' tall and I used to be extremely shy.
I actually grew up to be a preschool teacher and I love it!
I wanted to be a Laker girl more than anything until I was about nine.
Then I wanted to be a pilot (my eyesight is terrible so no go), a clinical psychologist (two years of research and I hated it) and now I'm in HR.
I'm also wishing I could just be independently wealthy and travel lots!
I wanted to be a zoo chef. You know, make food for the animals. Then I found out that in one of the first zoology classes you have to break a live bird's neck to prove you could make it through the program, and that dream was over.
After some years in corporate, I'm now working my dream job of being a shopkeeper for one of the most awesome concepts out there. I freaking love what I do.
My new fantasy job is becoming an expatriate and living in some amazing tropical paradise where all I do is bartend on the beach and serve locals and awesome tourists and other expats while eating ceviche.
wow. All of you had such normal dreams of what you'd become.
When I was little, I really wanted to be a mermaid.... like. for real.
When I grow up, I want to be a writer and everyone will love my books and I'll be in Oprah's book club. Well, Oprah doesn't have a show anymore and I have yet to write a book.
If the book thing failed, which so far it has, I wanted to open my own gym and coach gymnastics.
I type all this from my desk in admin for a social services agency. ugh.
As a kid, I wanted to, in order of changing my mind:
Ride and train horses in classical dressage.
Write.
Play music.
Write screenplays.
Counsel.
Now? I'm locked in on and extraordinarily excited to pursue a masters in mental health counseling with an emphasis in marital counsel. I've still got an undergrad English degree, however, kind of by accident (all that time drifting around, unsure of what I wanted to do, I took a lot of lit/writing courses).
When I was little I wanted to be a farmer...or a smuggler (for real!). Then I wanted to become an author. Now Im working on becoming a professor/ author and that's still my dream job.
@soyjoy222: Same here with the Oprah thing. When she quit I was like, "wait! I havent published my book yet!" Ha.
My first choice was to dance for the National Ballet and my seccond choice was to be a psychiatrist when I grew up.. now I am a boring old banker.
When I was young I always wanted to go to the olympics in synchronized swimming, missed it by one year. I wanted to become a pastry chef, and today I have my own cake business. I did ok I think.
when i was a kid i wanted to be a million things and i'm none of them now lol at the end of the day i just want to be extremely rich so i can go back to school and learn a few languages, learn how to play a few instruments, travel the world, etc.. so the solution is to become rich enough where i don't have to work and can just go to school and get degrees and dabble in whatever i want. i'm idea oriented with an entrepreneural kind of mindset and just want to make money to put my ideas in action and learn as much as i can since i was never a good student and missed out on a full college education. and that's the plan. working on a website idea right now that i think will make me lots of money *fingers crossed* :)
@CorgiTales: LMAO to being Pioneer Woman! LOOOOVE her!
Well, I wanted to be Julie Andrews when I grew up. I used to tie blankets around my waist and spin around singing, "The Hills Are Alive..." Realistically, I wanted to be a teacher. I used to line up my stuffed animals and siblings and "teach" them. Guess what? I am a teacher and I love it!
I don't remember what I wanted to professionally, but I specifically remember wanting to move to Los Angeles and go to UCLA for college. Then I grew up and realized my idea of hell is L.A. so I have no idea what I was thinking as a kid.
@Knubbsy-Wubbsy: Oooh I did a minor in physical anthro in university and I LOVED it. I was double majoring with architecture for a while but it was a bit overwhelming. I also realized that there were likely few job opportunities for a degree in physical anthro.... I still find it really interesting though :)
I've already had two careers (film and television as an assistant director, and then an interior designer), and now I'm trying to make a go of my Etsy shop. So far so good. I think I still have a million ideas of jobs that would be lots of fun to do though. Right now I think being a librarian would be fun. I love to read and I like the organization of a library (why can't I apply that organization to my home though?!).
My 6 year old nephew wants to be a pizza delivery guy because you show up at people's houses and they hand you a wad of money, LOL!
1) Ballerina, though I hated ballet and quit after the first recital.
2) Indiana Jones. It wasn't until a little later that I realized I meant 'archaeologist'.
3) Chemist
4) Virologist/epidemiologist
5) Psychiatrist
6) Perennial student
Currently hoping to be: Neuroscientist
I'm now finishing up my PhD and hope to become a college neuroscience professor (ie. a perennial student)
The first thing I can remember wanting to be (maybe around 3 or so?) is an artist. But I'm actually quite terrible at art.
Then when I was about 7, I, too, wanted to be a marine biologist. I thought I was unique, but apparently I was sadly mistaken haha.
Then I wanted to be a writer. I still kind of do, but I fully recognize that I really need a day job.
Now, I want to be a public relations specialist or speech writer, and so far I really enjoy all of the classes I've taken for that and I ADORE my internship in the college relations office, so I think it's a good fit.
Although ideally I'd like to be a travel writer for national geographic or something. Get paid to travel and write about it? Hell yeah.
An author, a painter, a doctor, and a blacksmith.. yes, I wanted to weild metal and preferably shoe horses.
Now I work in psych/science - medically slanted, so that kind of worked out!
@Owlet: What kind of neuroscience are you in? I'm applying to neurosci programs for grad school in pain processing from my psychophys experience post-grad - love to find more science lovers!
When I was little I wanted to be a wolf. haha- seriously. Interestingly my fiancee wanted to be a garbage man and my BFF wanted to be a strawberry!!!! Sadly, none of us ever accomplished these childhood dreams ;)
hahaha total redo!
I used to want to be a vet. Then I wanted to do pharmacy. Then PT. Then I wanted to be a nurse.
Now I want and am going to be a preschool teacher.
When I was a kid when I grew up I wanted to be a hair dresser, a mommy and a teacher.
I am a mommy, I worked in a salon (ran away as fast as I could from that job) then I worked as a preschool teacher and ran away from that job faster than the salon... guess I was wayyyy off.
Now when I grow up I want to be rich... a lottery millionaire. =D lol.
When I was little, I definitely wanted to be a teacher. My uncle (who worked at a school) actually got me a real chalkboard, chalk, & erasers and my dad hung it up outside to our deck so I could have "classes". I'd set my stuffed animals up in little chairs, get a hold of an old textbook, and go to town.
Right now, my top priority is being a Mom (working on it!). I definitely want to stay at home, but once my kids are old enough, I would LOVE to own a flower shop. I'm obsessed with the idea!
I wanted to be a lot of things as a kid, and spent several years of college still trying to figure it out:
obstetrician
veterinarian
marine biologist
teacher
jingle writer
dancer
photojournalist
I became a teacher.
