Unless you have an engagement party, etc., before hand, you could wait until the holidays- some people may want to make purchases off the registry then. (people don’t have to bring gifts, but some may.)

Depending on where you’re looking to register, many stores have seasonal items that wouldn’t be in stores over a year later. It’s probably good to find a department store, specialty, and one other (ex. : Macy’s, Crate & Barrel, and Target)  It’s easier for your guests, if you to register for more items at one store than fewer at more stores (100 items on one registry vs. 30 items on 3)

I started building my registry about 8 months before the wedding, and the little registry cards went out inside the shower invitations. I found from other’s experiences that some items were no longer carried by the stores if they made their registry too soon. The nice thing is, alot of places let you see what’s been purchased and let you tweak it if you think of something that you’ve forgotten or decide an item isn’t wanted anymore.

My wedding is in about 5 months, and we just started our registry this weekend.  But I think starting it a bit earlier is fine.  You can better plan for what you need that way.

If you have a registry, people will definitely buy stuff for your birthday, holidays, etc. Just plan ahead and decide what you like, but don’t get too attached as stuff will go out of stock between now and then.

Also, think about the stores you’re choosing. We were warned by several people to wait as long as possible to start a registry at Target. Apparently, they have a lot of turnover. FI and I started registering in January for our June wedding. We registered at BBB and Macy’s then, and then we started our Target registry last month. It has been nice, having 2-3 months before our showers, in case we want to switch anything.
