Start looking NOWWW!

You don’t want to make a rash decision so the more time the better!

I would say start trying on dresses soon to see what styles you like, but don’t buy until about 6-8 months out since you may change your mind about what you like (MANY people do). Keep in mind that many dresses take 5-6 months to come in, so only starting to look a few months out is asking for trouble. You will want it to arrive an extra month before the wedding at least so you will have time for alterations.

I say you could start looking next Spring or SUmmer (May-June 2014) if your wedding date is correct

I say start looking in the spring. My wedding is in may of next year and I bought my dress in April of this year. It takes a while for it to come in plus any alternations etc.

I would say to wait until the one year mark to start looking. I’ve been engaged for 2.5 years and when I first was engaged I threw myself into planning (knowing the wedding was far off) and it broke my heart when I seen a dress that I adored but knew I couldn’t buy so far in advance.

In September (13 months before) I started looking on eBay because my local dress shops have ridiculous prices since we are a very small town. I looked at dresses for weeks but I always went back to looking at this one dress that I adored, it was a San Patrick Caribu Dress. I still felt nervous about buying it over a year before the wedding but one day all of the stars alligned – it was on sale, it matched my measurements, and it was still the most beautiful dress I had ever seen.

I’ve had it for about 2 months now and still don’t regret purchasing it so soon. I am glad I hadn’t seen this dress before and fell in love with it to only not be able to get it when I was seriously looking. If I hadn’t started looking at this point and went with the standard within a year then I may not have ever seen this dress and would’ve settled for something less.

The plus side is that I don’t need to stress about looking for a dress and can now focus on other things. I also feel that 6 months ahead is way too close – if you take months to decide what kind of dress you want there is just no time left to alter it and just relax.

I would give it at least 7-8 months, if not 9.  So right now, you could start browsing dresses online and figuring out what you like!
