I want to surprise my FI with a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. Our wedding cake is part of the package at the venue, so I have no experience dealing with bakeries and cake makers. My question is - how far in advance should I start contacting bakers? How early do I place the order?

I also want to contact FMIL (she's hosting the rehearsal dinner) to run the idea by her, but I'm afraid she'll tell me I'm worrying about it too early. So would love to hear some advice.

You should at least be getting an idea of what you want in your head now.

I had my idea for our groomscake and ordered it about 9 months before the wedding. I love crossing things off of my list early to ease stress later on and it worked out wonderfully :) I definitely don't think you're worrying about it too early. You're being smart!

I've always heard that you should start at at least 6 months or so. But it's never too early!

@Miss Bella - It's mainly a southern tradition. It's a cake that is usually in a different flavor from the regular cake (traditionally, it's chocolate) and it's usually decorated for one of the groom's interests or hobbies! I think it started to provide an alternative for guests who don't like whatever the regular cake is, but now it's just a fun thing to express the groom's interests!

@Miss Bella- I had a pretty cake of my choosing and my groom got to have a fun cake for him :) It's a fun tradition, but it's definitely not required

I ordered my grooms cake in February and I am getting married in June.

I think you are smart to worry EARLY because it'll help you from being stressed later.

I agree with @bella...anything I can cross off the list early I do!!!

I'm ordering it when we do the wedding cake.

I never knew it was southern in tradition, but then again I am and love all things southern so it's just been the norm for me.

And let's face it, who doesn't love something slightly different and more chocolatey than wedding cake?  Variety is the spice of life!

I've designed T's cake well over a year ago and he thinks it's great!

I'm planning on making the groom's cake. I was going to make 2 seperate ones, 1 for rehearsal and 1 for the wedding, but FI unknowingly ruined this idea because he decided no rehearsal, so I'm trying to decide between a car and a companion cube for him haha. But if you're outsourcing I'd say start contacting people now. That way you know you have it nailed down and won't have to stress about it anymore.

We ordered ours the same time that we ordered our wedding cake. We're a little over 4 months away right now. I think the earlier the better!

i have a general idea for our grooms cake (Green Bay Packers).  However, I don't know if it's going to be at the rehearsal or the reception, and I don't know if I'm going to make it, or have a professional make it.  Lol.  Considering I'm trying to make my own baking business, it might be good practice if I made it, but I'm worried I'll be too stressed to make it around the wedding.

Oh and FI has no idea about it, major surprise!

My wedding isn't til January and I've had his cake planned since before our date was set! :) He is so relaxed about everything with the wedding "Whatever you want" "Which color do you like more?" "Do you like that font?" haha so I want him to have something really special, I have NO clue what the main cake will be but his is ordered, haha! I'm going to have a cake molded to look like a bottle of crown royal. No, we're not alcoholics, it's just his "drink" anytime we host things his gift is always a bottle of crown so I thought that would be appropriate!
