I'm already registered, and we're date twins! The Knot tells you to do it 9 months out, but really I was registered for my first date (May 2010).

I would start looking at bedding and china and find stores that have what you want, and then register there. Good luck!

I would do it in May.  My wedding was last october and we registered in June.  Even then some items were discontinued by our wedding.  So just be aware that you may need to check your registry as time goes on and replace items that the stores don't carry anymore

The two sides to this: on one hand, registering early is great because you give your guests the opportunity to use the registry to find gifts for pre-wedding events like engagement parties and bridal showers etc. Also, you have plenty of time to discover items you might not have realized you want at first. On the other hand, items get discontinued all the time and you are going to have to keep on top of your registry to maintain it, replacing items that are no longer available. We registered about six or seven months ahead of the wedding and that felt just fine to us, though I do wish we'd had the registry done before Christmas so relatives could give us Christmas gifts from it if they'd wanted to do so. If you feel ready, I say go ahead.

We're date twins and we registered 2 weeks ago.  As long as you're done before your first shower invites go out, you should be fine, but really you can go anytime at this point.  Some sites tell you to go as soon as you get engaged.

People have started buying us gifts already and my first shower isn't until June.  crazy, right?

I think it depends on if you are going to be having any showers soon.  If you aren't people probably won't ask until about when the invites go out.

I've talked with a couple of stores and they all recommended registering no more than 6 months out becuase the stock will change in that time.  We're getting married in October and are not planning to register until June.

I registered early because I was sending out save-the-dates with an inclosure with this info..I'm also having two bridal showers and a lingerie shower/bachelorette party so people needed the info (well, for the first two)

I'd say you can start registering now!! where do you want to register?

I'm getting married 10/23/10 and we registered this past weekend. My showers aren't until the summer but we sent our save the dates out in february because we have so many out of town people coming. People keep asking my mom where we're registered so we decided to go ahead and do it...and someone has already bought something off of one!

We registered about six to seven months before and I have been completely surprised by how often things we painfully picked to add have been discontinued or just aren't available anymore: pots and pans, linens, flatware, the list goes on.  I would honestly wait until 3 to 4 months before just so you save time avoiding selecting things that won't be available later on.
