I’ve read a lot about Engaged Encounter vs. pre-cana classes, but I haven’t seen any info on the recommended time to do the EE retreat. For those who have been on the EE retreat, when would you recommend couples to go? Three months before the wedding? A month before? Any advice would be appreciated! =)

PenguinGuy and I did our EE weekend just shy of 3 months before our wedding. I really think, based upon my experiences, that I would try to do it no more than 3 months before the wedding. Ultimately it is going to be a function of available weekends and your schedules.

If you have a friend getting married, I would suggest doing it together on a weekend that works for you both. My cousin did EE together with her sister and FI even though they were getting married a year apart and really enjoyed doing it together. We did the Pre-Cana with another couple and also enjoyed having a friend to chat with in the down time but also when they split up the girls and guys it’s nice to chat/benchmark.

@summer7911: I actually did it a year out. Honestly, I really don’t think it matters how close you are to the wedding. I wouldn’t go on EE a month before just in case something comes up during EE that you have to work through, though.

I would ask the church marrying you because I think some priests have preferences on when your doing it. For instance out priest wanted it done no longer away then 6 months from the wedding, so a year from the wedding wouldnt have cut it in our case. We did Pre-Cana though, it was a 1 day class as opposed to an all weekend long retreat which is the EE.

Thank you for all of the comments! We’re going to book our EE weekend for 3 months prior. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the retreat and wasn’t sure if people recommended doing it closer to the wedding so that you’re still on the “high” of the retreat on your wedding day. I guess it doesn’t really matter. HAHA 🙂

We have to do ours 4 months before, its the only one available in our area.

@summer7911:You’ll be on that high anyway! It’ll be nice because those lessons will still be fresh in your mind for marriage 3 months later.

I just did mine last weekend and I’m gettin married in 3 weeks
I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was really helpful but it was extremely intense and opened lots of doors about things we should talk about.
Not that I’m worried for the marriage and we are going to have these talks but now that I know what its like I would have done mine earlier to give us more time to discuss things that came out of the EE

We did ours about six months out. The priest didn’t really have a preference, oher than he wanted us to do the Focus test first. There were couples at ours whose wedding were from one month away to over a year away. Ours was in the Arlington, VA diocese and was a great program. I had a post about in back in May/June 2009.
