When the bride has difficult family relationships

@Robin32:  I have this going on a lot in my family. One relationship, the one w/ my mother, is getting worse and she has already told me flat out she is not coming. I will not be giving her an invite even if she changes her mind (wedding is a year away) because I am way too hurt by this. The relationship is on the mend with my sister closest to my age. I am hoping things keep getting better because I really want her there. I only will have one other person from my family attending. My oldest sister. I just don’t fit in w/ my family. I strongly feel this is because I am adopted…. but who knows.

I think for you, do what your gut tells you. If things aren’t perfect w/ someone but you really want them there, invite them. Someone who might cause a scene, have them stay home.

I’m going though the same thing!  I say if you feel like you shouldn’t invite them…don’t invite them….

It won’t be worth the stress on your big day.  On the other hand, if you think you could repair the relationship- maybe try to work on it before the invites go out.

Good Luck!

@Robin32:  Unfortunately, I haven’t spoken to my younger sister in just about 5 years, so needless to say, neither she nor my niece (who I still see when she visits my mom) were at my wedding. It made me sad, but ultimately it’s her loss. She is an abusive relationship, and she will be the one who regrets not going to my wedding because of her asshole boyfriend/baby daddy.

How big is your wedding going to be? If it’s going to be 100 people or less, I wouldn’t invite any of them, or their partners. Then you can say it was because of “space issues”!

But if it’s over 100 people, stick them all at the same table as far away from you guys as you possibly can.
