When to ask out of your lease?

@sangriiia:  Some leases require one or two months notice legally but at least one month is considered polite here.

I didn’t realize there was an etiquette dance around giving notice to move.  I never really cared about being “polite” in telling a property manager I was leaving the premise.  I just always followed the terms of my lease.    If she says give her a few weeks, give her a minimum of a few weeks!

@sangriiia:  Once you line up the other place, draft a letter that states your specific address (including apartment number, if there is one) and the date you will be vacating the residences.  You just need something in writing, and both you and the landlord should sign it to prove that everyone consented.  I would not give notice until you’ve actually found a place.
