do yourself a favor and wait. figure out the where, when and stye and some of the details, especially since you're well over a year out - people and relationships change. get a sense of what you want your maids to do and how much it might cost so when you ask, you can give them a full picture. that will save everyone from unpleasant surprises.
I've heard the advice to wait until about a year to 9 months before your wedding (if you have that long of an engagement). I wouldn't do it too early, because close friends are likely to change. You never know who you'll meet or will fall out of contact with. You want to give them enough time to plan on being in your wedding, but not so soon that you end up with people you aren't as close to. Good luck!

I know who I would be asking (I've known all for many years), it is just that I don't know who will be making the cut, because of budget, smaller wedding, etc. But sounds like I should wait 'til around the first of the year or so...

When would be the "appropriate time" to ask your ladies to be your bridesmaids??? I got engaged in June 08 and not getting married until April 10.. I still haven't asked anyone yet because I still don't know for sure who I wanted =/ Gosh, I really thought I had this planned out a looooooong time ago but now that it's here I don't know what to do!
