We're about to go through it. I called one of the JoP certified by our county, and he wrote our date down in his calendar (this was back in March, and our wedding isn't until next May), and said I should call him this fall so we could meet. We're going to meet with and interview all the JoPs we can so we can work with someone we really like. There's no harm in calling them now, the worst they can say is that they don't book that far in advance!
We originally had a minister booked (which made me uncomfortable). It's two weeks before my wedding and my dad called me today and told me he got the mayor to marry us. :) For me, two weeks!
It really varies. I talked to one who will book now for next June, whereas another won't start booking for then til Feb. or March.

I've booked all the major things for the wedding except for a justice of the peace. At the end of this month we'll be a year away from the wedding. It seems a little soon to book but then again this is the one and only thing about the wedding that I'm hesitant about how to proceed. Do we just meet with this person, talk with them about our ideas and then leave and call them back with a decision? Interviewing officiants seems strange but I do want someone we are comfortable with. Has anyone already gone through this process?
