I think once you decide on invites it is never too early… as long as you have all the correct information on them.
Are you ordering them pre-printed w/ all the ceremony and time info or are you doing that yourself?
I sent my invites out 6 weeks before the wedding and I would definitely recommend sending them out before then!

It’s true, never too early! Just to be safe, I’d order at least six months ahead of time.

I ordered my invitations in April. They were done in June (they’re letterpress) so I’ve had them for about a month and a half before they hit the mail.

For my June 20th wedding I ordered them in January.  They were designed but I put them together, gluing each section and so-forth.  Due to complications with a ditzy designer, I didnt get them until mid-April and they were to be mailed out the last week of April.  Id say at least a few months before to be safe.

If you aren’t doing Save-the-Dates, I would go with 2-3 months in advance. But give yourself lots of time to design the invites, print them, stuff them, address them, etc etc. Emphasis on LOTS of time!
