It took me about three months to find a dress. I tried on so many. Mine is a Maggie Sottero and will take about six months to come in, and I ordered it about 11 months out. If you would be happy with something off-the-rack then you can get it sooner, but I would recommend a minimum of six months out. Be sure to leave a month or two for alterations too.
It took me about 6 months to decide on a dress. I ended up going with a David's Bridal dress. I ordered in Feb and picked it up in April. I think if you want more of a designer dress, you'll have to give yourself a lot more time.
i bought my dress 11 months out, it's off the rack (from a boutique, not a bridal store). i went so early because i thought i was going to be very picky and have a hard time finding it, but it was in the first store we went to, third dress i tried on, and i didn't want to let it get away so i bought it right away. i wish i didn't give myself that much time because now i have to worry about fitting into it, but if you're ordering it than i hear a year before is pretty normal.
I'm 4 months out and I am going to look this weekend. I know it's late and people will cringe at the thought, but I am trying to be practical about it. We're having a destination wedding, I am dropping weight like crazy and I am okay with off the rack. If I have to expedite something and pay for it, I will.
And this, by no means, is any endorsement of doing it the way I am. If we started planning the wedding over a year ago, I think I'd be in a different state now. I know friends who have hustled and had a three month planning period, still had a great wedding, found a dress, etc.
I would say between 9 to 12 months. I am a fan of shopping in the season you are getting married so you know the temperatures and can match your gown appropriately. No sense in buying a heavy gown because its cold out today if you are getting married on a beach in 90 degree weather.
I bought mine just last week, soooo..8 months? My dress is a Paloma Blanca, so it will be like 4 months before it's in. I think this is ideal, plenty of time for alterations and whatnots.
To be fair, I did order it about 2 months ago from another bridal store who promptly went out of business last month. I managed to finagle a refund, and reordered it. So it would have been earlier.
I wouldn't go any further than 6 months out unless I were a destination or off the racker :)
just wanted to say THANKS for the comments. i realize that i need to get the ball rolling with the dress and i started seriously looking for what styles i like online so i can bring some pictures along. thanks again!

Hi everyone!
I am just curious, how far out from your wedding did you ladies purchase your wedding dress? Are there certain timelines for ordering certain types of dresses? I've heard of some taking as long as 30 weeks to come in, and others bought off the rack (especially Davids Bridal). So, what was it for you?
How long after you started shopping did it take to find the dress?
