Just start shopping…and don’t feel pressure to buy a dress the first time you go.  However, since you’re getting married KIND of soon…you do have to pick something rather quickly.

Have you looked online at styles you like?

Dresses can take up to 10 months to come in, plus with alterations. You can always get a dress rushed at an additional cost, but if you’re on a tight budget, that won’t be a good option.

@peachacid:  +1

My wedding is in May 2014 and I’ve been dress shopping once. I completely understand you wanting your mom to see the dress before you buy; I’m making a trip back home to go dress shopping so that she can see what I love. I have some weight that I want to lose before the big day, and seeing my body in a wedding dress was motivation for me! If you end up purchasing a gown before you get to your goal weight, please don’t order a size smaller; just order the size you are now.

Your wedding is coming up fairly soon, and some gowns can take up to 9 months to be made/delievered, so you might want to take that into consideration.

@Neetch:  Look at smaller places, too.  Make sure you have enough time for the dress to come in and be altered, but also make sure you look around before you choose!  You will be fine.

I think you should go soon.  You can go with your BMs, but you don’t necessarily have to purchase it that day.  If you find something you like, hold off on it, and go again with your mom.  Or if you don’t find anything, then go again with your mom!

But if you want your mom with you, definitely take her!  I don’t think I could have gotten mine without my mom there.

But I would go soon, mine they told me would take 4-6 months to come in.

@Neetch:  Good to hear! I also thought I knew what would look good on my body, and it turned out to be the opposite once I had them on 🙂 Go asap and have fun while doing it!

Be careful about ordering a size down. I knew I was planning on losing weight before the wedding, but I still ordered the size that fit me at the time. It is much easier to take a dress in than it is to let it out (although corset backs are a little more forgiving).

I ended up losing some weight, so it all worked out for the best. However, my sister had the opposite problem. She ordered her dress a size down and wasn’t able to lose the weight before the wedding. It was a huge ordeal and very stressful.

If you really want your mom to be there, arrange to have her see the dress before you actually purchase. I only went shopping with my mom and my older sister and it was perfect. Just enough support, not so many people that you are being pulled in eight different directions.

EDIT: Oops! I didn’t read all the way to the bottom where you said you wouldn’t order a size down 🙂 Ignore my above rant 😛
