Instead of calling it an "engagement party" you could call it a "one year countown" party or something like that to commemorate the fact that you only have 365 days left! We got engaged in May 2008 and had our party like, 2 weeks later, but it was a real casual bbq with sangria and burgers. I think it'd be fine to celebrate next year...mabye it just won't be an actual happy engagement party since you've had the ring for so long
I think you should have one this summer or fall. That way it is celebrating your engagement rather than the wedding itself (which you will no doubt celebrate close to the wedding!) My preference is to see them happen soon after engagement.
Thanks bees! I will have to talk to my fiance and our parents about when we can have an engagement party before it gets "too late." But if we aren't able to, I really like the idea of the "one year countdown!"
We were engaged several months before we had ours, and it was over a year until the wedding at that point. I think whenever it's convenient is appropriate.

My FH and I got engaged in March, but due to grad school, we won't be getting married til July 2011. When should our engagement party be, if we choose to have one? I've read that you shouldn't have it more than a year before the wedding, but will it be weird if we are engaged for a year and then have the party?
