My first fitting is today, 2 months before the wedding!  I personally don’t have an experience with David’s but I have to say I have heard generally pretty bad things about their alterations department.  I’m not even sure if they alter dresses that aren’t from their store.  I would look for an independent seamstress.

My store told me 6-8 weeks before the wedding.  I’m doing 6 weeks because that’s when I happen to be in my hometown where my dress is.

I have also heard negative things about DB alterations department.   My BMs are all taking their dresses elsewhere for alterations.

I got my dress at DB and had my first fitting yesterday! Yay!  I was not impressed at all by the alterations department.  I had initially tried on a floor sample size 0P which in my opinion and the opinion of the sales lady, fit-me-LIKE-A-GLOVE; just to a “T”.  I went to alterations and the lady thought it could be taken out at the hip a bit…..so I decided to order a new dress in size 2P to avoid the cost of alterations.  A couple weeks later (rush order), my dress comes in, I try it on, and it’s obviously way to big around my ribcage and the hips stick out on their own (it’s supposed to be a fitted dress).  The same alterations lady from before (who mentioned she remembered me) ignored that I said I felt like it was a little too big…..Anyway, the saleslady comes back, puts me back in the size 0P and it fit even better than before (I lost a couple pounds with all the stress of the my extremely short engagement).  I really think the seamstress just didn’t care and didn’t want to offer to fit the dress to me.  I ended up exchanging the newly ordered 2P for the original off the rack 0P.  Thank God for this sales lady who is so passionate about making her clients happy!

@PrncssDva – Sorry about the confusion with my new pic!  But yeah, we actually just sent out our invites last weekend, so I think the first dress fitting usually falls around invite sending time!

I had my first fitting 3 months before my wedding in June with my final fitting 2 months before.  I know you’re supposed to have your final fitting typically right before your wedding (in case of weight loss/gain) but I’ve been the same size for years so I knew it wouldn’t make a difference.

DO NOT go to David’s Bridal.  I got my dress there and the alterations dept wanted to charge me over $300 to alter my dress – a dress that they ordered a size too big for me without even measuring me.  They also said they couldn’t fit the dress in my hips like I wanted because of some side beading, so I was going to be stuck with a dress that was a size too large in the hips.  I took my dress to a local seamstress that I trusted and got the bust, waist and hips taken in, a bustle installed, and the hem shortened for a total of $120!!!  She did an amazing job and my dress fits me like a glove now.

yea it was.  I definitely recommend getting a quote from DB’s but also goin to a local seamstress that you trust and get a quote.

Bring all of your undergarments that you plan on wearing, extra crinoline if you’re using more, and most importantly your shoes!!!

I decided to get my alterations done early since I don’t really change in weight or size. My wedding’s Aug 7 and I went for my first fitting last last month (March 27 or something).  And then they scheduled my second fitting for May 27 –  2 months later!  I guess because my wedding date is so far away, they thought they could just take their time with it?  So it sounds like they’re going to stretch my fittings out over 3 months.  I mean, I guess I don’t really NEED my dress in the next 2-3 months… it’s just that… I want it…
