For holiday weekends, I've heard 6-8 months for the Save the Dates. In your case, lean a little more out toward the 8 month mark.
Invitations are a little different. Assume that many of your guests will know about your wedding before they get the invitation. Partly because of Save the Dates and partly because they have heard about it from you, your parents, grandparents, friends, etc. I've always been told 2 months out is when you send your invitations. You could possibly get away with doing it a week or so before. The problem with sending them out too early is your guests will lose their RSVP cards, misplace the actual invitation or other important inserts, or just put it aside and forget about it until the last minute.
Good luck :) And enjoy the DIY process. Its so much fun and your guests love the personal touch.
We sent out our STD's about 9 months beforehand. I was told ASAP to send STD's. For invites, I was told by my invitation lady that invites are usually send about 6-8 weeks before the wedding.
I would suggest sending your save the dates in February. Then, no worries about it getting mixed in with holiday mail and sufficient time to book places to stay. I probably would say late July to send your invite in case others still need time to book rooms.
We are planning on sending out save-the-dates in November for our wedding in July (so 8 months ahead) We are actually cheating a bit and sending them along with our Christmas cards (we are doing save the date-magnets) so those invited will get the annual Christmas card, along with our save the date in a magnet card carrier ...
I think I'm going to send STDs in mid-February and the actual invites the last week of July. We're going to SF the first week of August next summer, so I'll need to get them out before then or it will be the middle of August before I get them out.

Ok, we've decided to design our own paper products and then we'll have them letterpressed by Studio On Fire or a local press shop.
We've got a little under 14 months until our date,t since we're not exactly designers, we're getting started now. I'm trying to plan our schedule and deadlines. So, for a destination holiday weekend {Columbus Day is a holiday...kinda!} event where the guests have to book cottages in the little town, when would you send out the STD's {which will include all the booking info since we don't/won't have a website}? Then when would you send out the actual invitations? I am guessing that we'll add guests after the STD's go out, so the invitations will be the first piece of event information for some. How early is too early for both?
Thanks!
