Looking for opinions regarding the opening of baby shower gifts. Would it be rude to have the mom-to-be set up near the door with a display table for gifts? She could open the gifts as people arrive and then place them on the table with cards to be seen by all. Then everyone would be free to mingle for the duration of the party. Additionally, if guests have to leave early there will be no hard feelings that their gift hasn’t been opened. This is not how things are typically done in the South so I wouldn’t want it to seem rude. Opinions please.

shall70: I actually really like the opening presents portion of a shower, both as a guest and as a recipient. I love seeing what others have gotten and seeing the reaction of the recipient.

One thing I forgot to mention above. The shower is to be at a friends house and seating for everyone in one room would be really hard to accomplish.

Um if there isn’t enough room for people I say have the baby shower outside for the gift opening. The best part about baby shower are seeing the cute gifts the mom to be recieves during the shower. I opened mine in front of everyone…other wise what is the point of staying for the whole shower?

Given that the whole point of a baby shower is to present gifts to the mom,I think opening them at the door would be a little dismissive of the time, energy and money the guests have spent on choosing their present.
I feel it would be rude to keep guests standing at the door while they wait to give their gift to the Mom. She will also be under pressure to open the gifts fast to move the line along.
