I think some places require a minimum of 2 weeks but it depends on the shop. My bakery books up to 2 years in advance so months would be a minimum. I suggest you start calling around and probably get a move on it.
Good luck!
We booked ours six months in advance. We tried to do it sooner but the baker said don't bother, just come back in a while and they'll still have weekends open. I'd call the bakeries you're interested in and ask them what their availability is for your date and how far in advance their clients usually book. Good luck! Cake creating/tasting was our favorite part of planning. : )
I would check around at your local bakeries. We live in a small town/rural area so a few weeks ahead of time is the rule of thumb around here. But I'm sure in bigger cities you'll need to give them more time.
We booked someone about 4 months ahead of time, but didn't get down to the nitty-gritty of exactly what we wanted until a month out.

Hi ladies - what's the deadline to order your wedding cake? Generally? I'm having 175 people.
