So my fiance has this cousin who owns a condo on a beach which he frequently allows family members to "rent" during vacation season.
Without ever getting any real reason to believe that his cousin would offer us a free stay at the condo for our honeymoon as a wedding present, my fiance believes this will happen.
The destination is an ideal place for us to plan our honeymoon, and my two questions are:
How can he find out for sure if we will be able to use said condo without sounding like he’s just asking for a free stay? And when should we start planning the honeymoon for a wedding that is officially one year away?

I would just have your FI ask him about renting it. That would be the perfect opportunity for his cousin to offer to let you stay for free (or at least discounted). As long as you know you will be happy with the destination, and there won’t be any change in the wedding date, I don’t see any reason not to start planning a year out.

I’d let the fiance (since its his cousin) take control of the conversation next time you run into the cousin. Mention you’ve heard everyone that has stayed at his condo had a wonderful time and you’ve just started to look in destinations for you honeymoon. If he doesn’t offer right away, mention you were trying to budget things out, with the wedding expences in all, and was wondering what the going rate for the condo was. If he doesn’t bite then, I guess you’re outta luck.

Definitely have the FI have the talk – just ask about renting, which will give you an idea of availability and cost, in case the cousin doesn’t bite. Would you still consider going if you don’t get the condo for free or at a discount?
