When do you generally register?  We got engaged in Aug. and are getting married in Oct. 2010.  Thanks!

Before your first shower, I would think... or before you send out STD's since that is when people will start inquiring about gifts.

ASAP! People will want to get you an engagement present and you'll need something set up for when you have your shower. I didn't think I had to do it until later but my friend was like "DO YOUR REGISTRY SO I CAN GET YOU A PRESENT" and lo and behold we started getting a bunch of people asking about it and buying us engagement gifts. Never too early to make a registry.

I would say about 2 months before you're first engagement party, shower, or when you send out your STD's so you're prepared when people start to ask where you are registgered. If you register early, just make sure to watch for any items on your registry that my go on sale or may be discontinued.

We didn't end up getting any engagement presents (I never knew that people gave gifts for the engagement!), but we made sure it was done before we sent STDs that had our wedding website on them. Even though we only have very few gifts purchased off of them so far, I was pretty surprised about how early people started asking about where we registered!

our problem now is that we do not know what to register for.  We have a very small apartment (yay for NY living) and do not have the space or need for anything really.  We have all necessary kitchen/home implements since we already live together.  and we do not have a house to fill with stuff.  what to do?

as soon as you want! this was something my fiance was super excited about!  we registered this past september for our may wedding- so about 8 months out?  and in terms of WHAT, register for things you have always wanted.  if you're like me, we have lots of kind of crappy stuff from college and need actual things that are nice- quality skillets and cups etc.  if not, go for an alternate type of registry and register for your honeymoon!

We just registered last week for our 10/9/10 wedding, since we're sending out the STD's now, which have our wedding website on them.  We put the registry info on our website.

Ehh, I think sooner rather than later, but not immediately after the engagement. You don't want to do it so soon that the things you chose are discontinued or sold out, something I hear happens more often than you might guess. Maybe I am saying this to make myself feel better about the fact that we are six months out and still haven't registered! We are having an engagement party in a few weeks but its not really a gift giving thing, so I'm not too worried about it. Definitely have your registry complete before any showers though, and for sure by the time you send out your wedding invitations!

We didn't get any engagement gifts either, and sent our STDs out with the website before we'd done our registering. I just put a note on there saying (not done yet!) and no biggie.

We're already registered because I'm having a shower on Jan2, so my aunt (hostess) wanted to make sure we had registered before she sent her invites, and I think that's really logical. Plan it around when people might want to be giving you gifts (showers, parties, etc) and give them at least a month lead time.

We're registering in March/April for our Sept wedding.  My first shower is in May so it just needs to be done before those invites go out.  We've been engaged for a year and no one inqired about an e-gift from a registry.

I am getting married the week after you! We received no engagement presents (Spaniel, I too didn't know gifts were given for engagements!) and I don't think I am going to have a shower until August. I have also heard too many stories of disappointed brides and grooms when items were unavailable or discontinued. So, FI and I are going to start the registry process maybe around June. We just sent out our STDs, and put our website address on them. Under the registry part of the site I just said "coming soon!" If anyone starts asking, we will register sooner, but I just don't see the point! Of course, if you are going to have a bunch of pre-wedding events like multiple showers or engagement parties etc., then register before those to accomodate people who would like to get you a registry gift. But I don't think there is a rush!

I think we waited longer than most. We registered less than a month ago and we're about 4 months till the wedding. I figured as long as it was before any shower invites went out, we were ok. And no one has bought anything off our registry yet.
