Oh the wedding websites, I’m seeing advice to register anywhere between 4-12 months before the wedding.
Also, we don’t have an exact date set yet (we have a month set, but the exact date will depend on when venues are available), so if we need to change the wedding date do stores let you update your details to change the date?

Yes, you can change your date. But unless you are having an engagement or shower I wouldn’t worry about registering until you are closer to your date.

I don’t see why changing the date would be a problem – definitely not a big deal.
As far as when to register, it really just depends. If you’re having an engagement party, you should probably have at least a small registry started before then. Beyond that, as long as you’re registered before you send out invites and start having showers, you should be fine!
We registered pretty early, but we had a lot of people asking about registries, and we wanted to register before we sent out our save the dates. So, we ended up registering in March/April for our January wedding. The only problem with registering so early is that a lot of stores have seasonal items that won’t be available any longer once guests start purchasing things!

We registered in late December for our mid-July wedding and that was way too early. We had so many things discontinued (especially at BB&B) that before we sent out invites we had to practically re-do the entire thing so that the items on there were actually available. What a pain! (and no – NONE of these were “seasonal” things).
I’d say you should probably set up your registries about 3 maybe 3.5 months out. That gives you plenty of time before invites and such go out to make little changes and additions but should help minimize the chance of lots of things being discontinued.

I thought it was really early too, but a couple days ago my fiance’s parents called and told us someone from their church would be calling us in the next couple weeks because their church wants to have a wedding shower for us. So I figured we needed to be registered at least one place in case they ask!
We went ahead and registered at Target yesterday. If stuff gets discontinued we’ll just go back and add other stuff… I think we’ll hold off on registering at other places until later.
