Yes, you can change your date.  But unless you are having an engagement or shower I wouldn’t worry about registering until you are closer to your date.

I don’t see why changing the date would be a problem – definitely not a big deal.

As far as when to register, it really just depends. If you’re having an engagement party, you should probably have at least a small registry started before then. Beyond that, as long as you’re registered before you send out invites and start having showers, you should be fine!

We registered pretty early, but we had a lot of people asking about registries, and we wanted to register before we sent out our save the dates. So, we ended up registering in March/April for our January wedding. The only problem with registering so early is that a lot of stores have seasonal items that won’t be available any longer once guests start purchasing things!

We registered in late December for our mid-July wedding and that was way too early.  We had so many things discontinued (especially at BB&B) that before we sent out invites we had to practically re-do the entire thing so that the items on there were actually available.  What a pain!  (and no – NONE of these were “seasonal” things).

I’d say you should probably set up your registries about 3 maybe 3.5 months out.  That gives you plenty of time before invites and such go out to make little changes and additions but should help minimize the chance of lots of things being discontinued.
