I have heard 6 weeks before the date from my FMIL have also heard 3months from the women who is designing my invites.
6 weeks is a common rule of thumb & often times people who do not send out save-the-dates send them a little earlier :)
we aren't doing save the dates, and sending ours out 9-10 weeks beforehand. the majority of the bees with my same wedding date are sending theirs out 13-14 weeks before though- that seemed too soon for me. i don't want people to rsvp yes and then forget! haha
Rules of etiquette say 6-8 weeks.
We mailed my daughter's wedding invitations exactly 1 month prior, which is when I receive most wedding invitations these days.
I think if you are inviting out of town guests, it is probably a good idea to give them as much notice as possible. We, however, did not have that dilemma for the most part and those that were traveling had long before made their travel plans.
Our invites are going out this week (at roughly the 3 month mark) with 8 weeks for the guests to RSVP. That will give me a few weeks to track the guests who failed to RSVP down, and will give us a cushion in case we want to add more to the guest list - which I don't expect we will, but you never know.
