We did ours about 4 months before, cause that was all the time we had.
I think you can send them whenever you have them ready. After all, they aren't the invite, just the save the date. "Proper etiquette" says you should send them 3-4 months before. But it's your wedding, do it how you'd like! : )
if you were having a full-on dw, i would definitely send them as early as possible. with only a 2 hour drive for most, yes, that would be early...but who cares?
The purpose of the STD is to give your guests plenty of time to plan ahead for your event, whether that means keeping their calendars clear and/or saving money or vacation time so they can attend. From that perspective, I say it's absolutely NOT too early unless you're not firm on the date and/or location. Otherwise, the more time you give them to plan for it, the better.

I love the idea of sending STD's in holiday cards...only I'm sure it'd be way too early for me to send them. I'm having a semi-destination (2 hours for most people and most will need to get a hotel room) event next fall.
