i think it's perfectly alright to wait until after the wedding--people aren't necessarily expecting the thank you cards before the wedding. however, the upside of purchasing a few now and sending them out is that they know right away that you appreciate it, and also very importantly--you'll have less to do after the wedding!
i think it's ok to wait until after the wedding to send thank you's, and they'll understand why you did it once they get the cute puc. but personally i wouldn't want to wait that long because i think it would be a lot of thank you's to send out all at once. i'm doing them as they come in to relieve some of the hand cramps later on.
I'm planning on using a picture of us from our engagement session for most of our pre-wedding gifts, and then a similar shot of us in our wedding attire for gifts received closer to the wedding or after it. Mostly, I just don't want to let the Thank You Card mountain grow too tall, lest I have difficulty reaching the summit.

my original idea was to use a picture of us from our honeymoon for our thank you cards, but i didn't think about how many gifts we'd recieve before the wedding. if we wait until after the honeymoon, the gift will have been here for over 2 months!
should i pick up some thank you notes and start sending them out now? let people know (email or something) that the gift has arrived and send formal thank you notes after the honeymoon?
