We got engagement Dec 2012, I started trying dresses on this past September, and purchased it/picked it up in October.

You really only need 6-9 months in advance to order your dress. Personally, I wouldn’t start looking until Sept 2014 for many reasons – your tastes might change, you might see some new dresses that come out next year that you like, etc.

@TTReverie:  I got engaged Nov. 2011 and I’m getting married June 2014. I looked online before I was even engaged. I had my first and only appointment the beginning of this past March. I ordered my dress that day and it came in the beginning of June. They told me it could take up to 6 months to come in. I would probably browse on line a bit and maybe spring or summer of 2014 start trying on dresses.

I got engaged in July and my wedding isn’t until 2 years. I went looking with my mom on a whim to see what I liked and how much I would need to save up, and actually found my dress! It was a discontinued floor model, originally $1,750 and on sale for $500. So needless to say, I couldnt pass it up since it fit me perfectly and it blew me away! If i decide I don’t want it, I’m out $500, so what? Its new and I can sell it online. I say you go out and see what you like, and don’t go with anything you like in mind since mine is the complete opposite of what I was looking at. You never know what you’ll find. =)

I’d give yourself a year at least. Dresses can take up to 9 months to order, and it may tak you longer than you think to find one. And you still need time for alterations. I’d start next summer.

I got mine about a year before our wedding.

Sadly, I’d also wait a year before starting to try things on. But look online all you want!

Yup, wait at least a year before your wedding before you start trying. The problem with trying on dresses is that you’re likely to fall in love with something and want to snap it up straight away!
