Yes, Bees. My name is Isis. And now every time I’m presented to someone there is that awkward brief minute of silence that follows a sorry, what? Um yeah. That’s right. Isis as in that ISIS so mentioned for their horrific acts And tactics.
Nothing I can do and in the great scheme of things not a real problem but it is a little uncomfortable right now. Everytime I read something I’m like oh man… It really sucks that my name is now associated with such horrors :-/

Play up the Egyptian goddess angle 🙂
My friend Katrina had a similar problem, since it’s a somewhat uncommon name that most people associate with a devastating hurricane. She was, of course, born way before that hurricane and not in any way named after it, but it was tough for her to have her beautiful name associated with that.

Gosh, I am really sorry that you are in this situation. I think it is a real problem, as a person’s name is special to them, and to have this association is awful. I wish I had more to offer to make you feel better, but I empathize with you.

I think the name is GORGEOUS. Screw them for using it!!!!!
To be honest, I thought you were going to say Voldemort. I know. Ridiculous.

Start going by a nickname or stand proud and know you do not represent such horror. My fiancé mother hates me she says my name so disgustingly that you cannot not correct her. But I just stand proud and know that she may see bad in it due to her past but I do not see that bad and anger inside me. Do not let them get you down. You are not ISIS you are Isis and a beautiful Isis at that that upholds a beautiful life.

KapOct18: If you have not heard, maybe you should consider yourself lucky and not bother to find out. I have found it very disturbing. But if you really want to know, just put ISIS in google news or some other search engine. Just beware the pictures and make sure you don’t stumble upon a video!

Just read the other comments and I have to be honest. I have never ONCE associated the name Katrina with the hurricane. In Bollywood, there is an extremely famous actress named Katrina and I hear/see the name all the time and never made that association. And despite the current events surrounding ISIS the terrorists, I think if I met you, Isis, I’d still think: Gorgeous name!
There was a TV show when I was young about a superhero: Mighty Isis. Just the other day I was playing superheroes with my small nephew and I chose Isis as my avatar. I love that name.

KapOct18: You may be the only person who hasn’t heard of them, which definitely isn’t a bad thing.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/isis-5-things-to-know-about-the-iraqi-jihadist-group-1.2684540 (definitely do not watch videos).
But Sporty-Bee: you should definitely play up the Goddess thing – Goddess of Health, Marriage and Love. Way better 🙂 I always thought it was an odd name for a terrorist group, because it is such a beautiful unique name for a woman. I still think it is beautiful.

Ohhh I love, love, love the name Isis!! I thought it was the coolest thing ever as a child. I’ve got a scrap of paper somewhere with Isis scrawled on it as a future baby name.
You should definitely play up the Egyptian goddess angle! Or even that it’s the dog’s name on Downton Abby (okay…not great. But she was a good dog!!).
On the upside, ISIS is now just IS, so hang in there!! The association will pass. That group has changed names so many times in the past few years, I’m sure it’s just a temporary phase!
If it came up, I would say, “technically ISIL is the more correct acronym” and launch into a lengthy spiel about how the S is for “Sham”, which by modern definition translates to the Levant *not* Syria. Can guarantee people won’t bring it up again 😛
It’s an amazing name. Own it!

Isis is a beautiful name. My wedding dress was called Isis in fact! Hopefully the media will start calling the group IS soon. I don’t know why but every time I have seen the news recently they are still calling it ISIS. I would never give you a weird look if I was introduced for you. Obviously you were named long before the group existed, just like anyone over a certain age named Katrina predated the hurricane. Hugs!

I have a friend named Katrina, who is actually from New Orleans. It was a hard couple of years for her, but most people (at least outside of LA) have moved on enough that she doesn’t get doubletakes anymore when introducing herself. My former college classmate Osama, on the other hand … oof.
Isis is a lovely name, and this moment in history will eventually pass. Sorry you’re having such a hard time with it right now, but just ride it out!

KapOct18: Islamic State of Iraq and Siria, an islamic militant group seekng to take over Iraq. They are responsible for the beheading of 2 American journalists and possibly a British humanitarian helper.
Sporty-Bee: I’ve always loved the name Isis; hope, as PP states, that this moment passes, for what it represents and for your name too.

Sporty-Bee: I really do think it’s a lovely name, but I can see why you are feeling that way right now. I like to think we won’t be hearig ISIS for long, so eventually I’m sure you won’t have to think twice about it.
KapOct18: For reals?? Wow.

I think its a gorgeous name! It was actually on my list for future baby names for a while, but now I feel like its sort of off limits. I know that sounds wierd, but I’d hate for people to think my kid was named after a crazy terrorist group. At least your name was given to you well before “ISIS” even existed. Hopefully, the media will just start referring to them as IS or something else. Didn’t they change their name recently anyway???
