@TroubadourTango I agree with you 100%!  My SIL just had this conversation, some of the dress out there are tragic!   All of the styles feel VERY outdated.  My girls are wearing Noir by Lazaro, they are much more unique than the average BM dress but the only issue is they don’t come in an array of colors.

Adriana Papell makes really beautiful evening gowns and they sell them at Nordstrom and are not crazy expensive so this may be a good option for you.

@TroubadourTango:  I’m having the same problem.

I dont like traditional bridesmaids dresses, but need their colour flexibility.  Howeve, even with 55 colours to chose from by each designer, we are failing. I found my dress quickly, but finding bridesmaids dresses is impossible.  We don’t like the style of some, but like their colours.  Then, we find a style we like and it doesn’t come in a color we want!

@TroubadourTango:  I only had 1 BM and she got her dress from Cache….it was normally supposed to be 200 but she got it on sale less than 100 and it was really great quality. Maybe you could try looking there…..good luck!

@TroubadourTango:

I’m having the same problem! I think that i’m going to go with a pretty champagne colored gown from Nordstrom or Lord & Taylor made by Adrianna Pappel. She has some really great (non-bridesmaidy looking) gowns for under $200. check it out!

@TroubadourTango:  I really felt the same way you did. You should have heard my bridesmaids 1 hour into “bridesmaid dress shopping day”!!!  They HAAAAATED almost all the dresses I made them try on.  They were like “oh look! ugly is here too! awesome! not!”   They basically thought that 95% of the dresses looked all the same and were boring (and thus ugly).

(this makes my bridesmaids sound b*tchy and mean, but they aren’t at all. it was actually quite funny…they were soooooo snarky about dresses that were available, and I felt their pain!)

I remember that Pronovias had a really stellar (and expensive!!) line of bridesmaid/evening dresses.  I would look through it and dream of having enough money to  “gift” my bridesmaids a $1k dress that they would never wear again.   LOL

Good luck!  I nixed long and went for short, and that worked out perfectly for the wedding!

Most definitely try Noir by Lazaro! My girls are wearing that desiner and they love the dresses because it doesnt feel like a bridesmaid dress. I have 8 girls so 4 will wear one style and the other 4 will wear the other.

PS. They are SUPER short on the models but on my girls (all under 5’5) they were at the knee.

@TroubadourTango:  Also it might be worth checking out renttherunway.com. I’ve used the site several times and love it!

Ugh yes. Much needed thread.

I’m also trying to put my bridesmaids in long and formal gowns but everything either looks like it belongs at a prom or on a beach. I can’t find anything that feels classic, elegant, and formal!

@TroubadourTango:  I got my dresses from Etsy 🙂

There are some talented sellers on there!

@TroubadourTango:  If you are struggling to find the right dress then custom is probably the way to go! 🙂

jenny yoo makes some nice dresses.  She wa sick of the typical bridesmaid dresses so she created her own line and branched out!

@TroubadourTango:  If you have access to someone who does quality work, I’d say go custom, and don’t even think twice.  I also agree with your lament in general and have also heard many friends say even designers who normally do good work on other types of clothes tend to do work that is disappointing/clearly represents a poor value when it comes to bridesmaid’s dresses.

As I’ve said before, I actually still have a bridesmaid’s dress in the back of my closet that fits me well and is an amazing color…but the fabric and workmanship are so shoddy that I’ll never be able to wear it again even though I wouldn’t mind doing so!

@TroubadourTango:  HA! I totally felt the same way about ML’s line which is odd because I love her wedding dresses! Having the dresses custom designed sounds amazing!

I think it’s even more difficult to find elegant and formal long dresses than short ones.
