We registered at Bed Bath and Macy's in January. So far no one has bought anything and tons of stuff has been discontinued at Macy's. I would recommend holding off on registering for as long as possible. I think it would be good to be registered at the time that invitations get sent out.
We registered at Home Outfitters (in Canada) and we registered just before we sent the invites out- which is a great idea!
We are registered at Macy's, Crate & Barrel, and Sears -- I agree with the previous post that invitation send-out time is good BUT do ask the sales associates when things go in and out of season. Some things will be there for years, but others are seasonal. Specifically, at Crate & Barrel, they told me that linens switch out pretty often and we'd need to check back closer to our October date.
We registered at Kohl's, Macy's and BB&B. I think I started registering like 2 months before the shower.
We are plannig on registering at Crate and Barrel, Macys and Bed Bath and Beyond. I think we may also register at Williams Snoma or Sur La Table just for my FMIL's sake because that is where she likes to shop and we would like to give her some guidance as our tastes are different than hers. I have been engaged since last August and have a long 2 year engagement so we are waiting to register til late next spring (like 6 mths before the wedding) even though my FMIL wanted us to register the day after we got engaged.
We registered at Crate & Barrel, Kohl's and Macy's. We registered the same week my sister sent out the shower invites (4 months before the wedding). Definitely research the return policies. We thought about Target- but their returns aren't always that great (I had some friends who had problems returning double purchases off the registry b/c it was beyond their 90 day return deadline). Kohl's also has high seasonal turnover- I have been checking our choices once a week or so!
Macy's...
... some of the posts on here are making me wonder if that isn't a huge mistake

@belle I was thinking the same thing! I assumed I would for sure register at Macy's but now I'm scared!
I'm at Bloomy's for sure right now... we may add on a Williams Sonoma registry, depending on if we decide we need some major kitchen items that Bloomingdale's doesn't offer.
We did Crate & Barrel and Bed Bath & Beyond. They have great selections and excellent customer service. Plus you get a discount after your wedding date (10% at both stores), and BB&B is even having a 20% event for people to complete their registries.
Target, Kohls & Jcpenney... My big registery is at Target but I wanted my bath stuff from Kohls and some kitchen stuff from Jcpenneys... I registered about a month or more ago..
