J. Crew does a lot of dresses like you’re describing – nice fabrics but minimal adornment.  Not sure if you want white or ivory, but Amsale does bridesmaid dresses that are lovely and could work for you.  Lastly, for that budget, you could almost certainly get a pre-owned Amsale or Romona!  Personally, I’d probably go the sample/pre-owned route for a simple dress rather than a cheaper manufacturer, because the quality of the fabric and construction is going to be so much more apparent.

You could check out some DB dresses. They have alot of dresses available under that price point. Also Zac Posen’s line will be coming to them Feb 2014. I would wait to look for dresses if that’s your actual wedding date. New dresses coming out every season.

Also the Hjelm group (Lazaro, Jim Hjelm) makes bridesmaids dresses in white and ivory; those will be less embellished (but maybe not bridal enough).

@waitingforthering2:  Look into bridesmaids dresses in ivory — that’s what I did.  Actually way below your budget, my dress was about $200, but I got a LOT of compliments on it.

I had a hard time finding something elegant yet simple with straps.  I seriously considered this bridesmaid dress from Alfred Angelo (after the consultant kept giving me strapless beaded dresses to try on). It comes in white or ivory (or any other color you want), has a beautiful train and the fabric was so much nicer than the wedding dresses.  I think it was $189? I tried it on with a petticoat to make it a little puffy and more “bridal”.

As pp’s have suggested, JCrew have a lot of plain, elegant, dresses to reasonable prices – so that would be my first go to. Might also be worth checking out BHLDN. A little pricier, but you might luck out and get something relatively cheap on sale.

@waitingforthering2:  I’d there we’re ever a white dress to give me regret it would be that first one. Thank god it is entirely too expensive!!!

Anyways. If you are willing to take the plunge, my dress is straight from china. And the quality is pretty fantastic for the fifty bucks I paid. It’s structured and fully lined with no beading or lace  – similar to what you want. If you are pretty far out from your wedding, you could always give it a shot.
