Definitely go to a large, custom privately owned jewelry store. We have a few here in St Louis that are monstrous. They are definitely more expensive but you can see a large variety of stuff.

Personally, I have an E center stone, and you can tell the difference when you hold it up against my other stones, which are G’s. You have to stare really freakin’ hard though.

We went to the diamond district in NYC. We just fit it into a trip we already had planned there. But you can just walk around and see lots of different settings, or you can make appointments ahead of time (what we did) to see stones with specific diamond dealers.

If you really want to educate yourself about diamonds before shopping I would highly recommend the forums at pricescope.com. Those women really know their stuff and will probably be able to answer any diamond-related questions you might have. There are lots of pretty rings to look at too!

I live in NYC so we went to the diamond district. There are so many shops there you have a huge variety to pick from.

Asscher cuts are not commonly kept in stock, my FI went to the diamond district too and even they had to call around to find what he wanted. I would call ahead and ask what they could show you if your heart is set on Asscher. FYI I have an Asscher and we are in love.
