Just curious - I've seen SO many 'get them from a shelter!!!' responses to posts on here, I'm curious as to where everyone got their pets.
We got our kitten when one of my friends neighbors cat had an "oopsie" litter.
ETA: Before we got our kitten we were looking at getting one from a shelter or foster home, but weren't able to be because I wasn't 21 yet. I guess that's the magic age where you become responsible enough to own a pet?
I got our dog from a shelter and our cat...well I bought him from the back of a van technically haha. Actually I found an ad on Craigslist and met this woman halfway. It was sketchy, looking back on it haha. The cat's himalyan, and I knew I wanted a long haired cat, which is why we didn't get him from a shelter.
I got my cat from my cousin's girlfriend. Her cat had a litter of kittens and she needed to find homes for them (ps--she finally got her spayed after that).
We have a cat from a reputable breeder. We knew what kind we wanted and sought him out. And we couldn't be happier. He was $800 (!) but worth every penny.
Not sure if you would count it as a shelter but I got my cat from a rescue group. They mostly use foster homes though, not a shelter, so I said other :)
I got one from a reputable breeder and one from who i THOUGHT was a reputable breeder, but wasn't.
I'm a fan of very specific cat breeds with particular temperments (exotics and himalayans).
I got my cat from the shelter. Hoping to get a dog this year and will try to get her from a breed rescue.
We got one cat from a shelter, one cat from cragislist (I guess we rescued him), one dog we got from craigslist (after leaving there we called an reported them... the conditions were horrible and the people had 27 dogs!) and one dog we got from a reputable breeder because honestly we wanted to be able to raise her from a puppy and we wanted a specific breed.
We have a boxer and we got her from a boxer rescue home. In the past, our other two dogs were from a shelter and from a Labrador rescue.
We adopted our pup from a shelter.
I'm a HUGE supporter of adopting/rescue, etc. There are so many unwanted animals out there!!! :(
I also 110% believe in spaying/neutering. If everyone spayed/neutered their pets there wouldn't be such a huge overflow of unwanted pets in shelters! Ugh. Annoys me every single time.
We got our cat from a rescue organization--which isn't really the same as a shelter because the animals are placed in foster care until they are adopted. I didn't see an option like that in the poll, so I didn't vote. :)
Both of our furbabies came from the shelter. Save a life! :)
First pet - Charles the cat. I was leaving the Humane Society (looking for a kitten - didn't find one) and a lady was walking in with a large box. I asked what was inside, she proceeded to tell me her "damn cat got pregnant again" and she was there to surrender the kittens. I asked if I could see, they were all grey except for one little black guy sitting in the corner. She gave him to me, and I then proceeded to walk back into the shelter, into their clinic, saying I found a kitten and wanted to get him checked out, haha.
Second pet - Gabby the American Bulldog. Gabby is from a breeder. I was told by my old landlord that if she ever heard my dog bark it would be out the door, so I was very dead set on finding a dog that wouldn't bark. American Bulldogs are known for not barking. I would have adopted an AB mix, but you still aren't sure what you're getting, so I researched the hell out of breeders and got my soulmate, Gabby.
Third pet - Louie the cat. At my old apartment I would let Charles the cat outside (I don't in my new neighborhood, too close to a main road) because he's a hunter by nature and LOVES it. Well, one morning, after he got up, got his wet food, and I let him outside, I heard him screeching outside my door. He normally only does this after I get home from work, but when I opened the door he was sitting there with a tiny little kitten sitting next to him. I actually believe he carried him up the steps because Louie couldnt' have been more then a few weeks old and I don't think he could have gotten all the way up the stairs to my door.
Fourth pet - Dudley the boxer/lab/who knows what else mix. I found him on Craigslist. He was $10 and out of an "oopsie litter". The old owners had kept the puppies outside and he had fleas so badly that his fur was falling out and I was afraid he would be anemic. When people ask me if I "rescued" him, I respond that by the definition of the word "rescue" yes, I did, lol.
Last but not least - Tyson the coonhound/pittbull/who knows what else mix. He was adopted from the Humane Society. I saw his picture, fell in love, did a meet and greet with the other two dogs that night and brought him home. Not nearly as interesting as the other pets, haha.
And yes, I still have all five of my furbabies.
PS - I voted that I'm awesome, because I really didn't fall into any of those categories.
PPS - I would never purchase a dog or cat from a petstore. I actually have nightmares about puppy mills - I couldn't risk supporting one.
my red merle border collie and fluffy ragamuffin kitty both came from different shelters. adopt, adopt!!!
We got our persian kitty from a terrible breeder. Then got his sister from a shelter. We got our puppy from another bad breeder. With the puppy - we wanted a specific breed and also wanted a puppy (under 6 months). We lucked out and he is very healthy and a pretty good representative of the breed. The breeder just has too many diff breeds going on for my taste.
My mom shows and has bred dogs before. The last thread I read about shelter vs breeder was very offensive to me as all the people touting shelter dogs and bashing purebred breeder really infuriated me.
Reputable breeders are good dog owners. They care about who gets their puppies and they will take back any dog who the owners no longer want. One of my moms friends sold a puppy who then lived with its owner 9 years. The owner passed away. The breeder then took back the 9 year old dog.
I still keep in contact with the breeder of my dog. She sends Christmas cards and I send her pictures of my Deuce.
I agree that people should definitely look into shelter dogs. I want to get a rescue myself as my next dog. However, I do not think you should bash good, reputable breeders. Many of them are caring loving people who want their dogs to go to the best homes possible. There are puppy mills, and bad breeders. Do research and stay away from those people so they'll go "out of business". I think if everyone did a little research before buying a dog we'd have a lot less shelter dogs out there.
Also, ALWAYS SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!!!
We got Lincoln from a “free to good homes”. FI told me not to get my hopes up and that he wasn’t sure if we would actually be getting the kitty but that we would just go look. We drove to the person’s house, which was (for lack of a better term) a dump. We could smell the cat pee from outside, it was terrible. She brought Lincoln out to us and he was the sweetest little boy we had ever seen, though COVERED in fleas. She hardly got two words out and FI was like “we’ll take him!”.
We could see into their living room and that place didn’t even look like humans could live there so we knew we couldn’t let this little boy go back into that house. The fleas were totally gross but we took him directly to the vet and those were gone within a few days.
Here’s our "lion"…

Animal Rescue League! Our dog's mom was turned over to a rural shelter when she was pregnant. The staff hid the puppies in a closet with the mom until they could be weaned (shelter policy was to put down the puppies ...) The shelter staff then contacted an animal rescue who picked up mom & pups and brought them to the city. They were placed in a foster home until they were adopted.
@ejs4y8: I love Himalayans! They're gorgeous! And mine can be so cute and snuggly one minute, silly and insane the next, and kinda bratty and snappy the next! He's so entertaining and I love his quirky personality. Even DH who is NOT a cat person adores him!
We got Derby from a local rescue group :) She was originally in a shelter in Kentucky...the thougt of it makes me so sad! ADOPT YOUR PETS!!
shelter shelter shelter! my cat actually came from freecycle...she was 6 weeks old and had been adopted by a family but was terrorizing their dog and it wasn't working out, so she either would have gone to a shelter or to fi. my dog was rescued from a high-kill shelter, and we adopted him from the rescue group.
We were her 4th home in 6 months, yes 4th.
Home #1: Where she was born. We think they thought she was going to be more rottie, because they docked her tail. They abandoned her and her siblings on the side of the road.
Home #2: A guy who adopted her with his g/f and they broke up.
Home #3. A friend of guy #2 who had two small children who left her in the backyard to chew on two by fours. She was too high strung for their family. He literally gave us a 3/4th bag of dog food, a dog house, a dog bed, and her for Free. He told us if we didn't take her that night, she was going to the pound.
I just realized this week is 2 years since we adopted diverdog!!!
We adopted our amazing amazing amazing beagle/australian shepard mix from a rescue foundation, she was rescued as a puppy and saved from being put down. She is seriously the best dog I could ever ever ask for, she is the sweetest thing ever. I am 100% TEAM ADOPTION!
One is from a breeder the other we "re-homed" from a family on Craigslist.
I got Stew from a breed-specific rescue group that pulled him out of a local shelter. Pure bred, super cute, and (might I add), about 1/5 of what I would've paid for him in a pet store or from a backyard breeder.
@ribbons: I think you live in the DC area, if you want an amazing rescue foundation please check out http://www.aforeverhome.org/ that is where we got our puppy (got her at 10 weeks have had her now for over 2 years), they are so great and so helpful and if you want a puppy they always have tons, they really care about where their dogs go and the foster them so they have a little bit of training already when you get them.
I guess I should prob list the cats too. I had a cat that I got from a rescue, but he passed away :( The cats we have now FI got before we met. He had three.
1- was a gift from an ex-gf... he doesn't know where she got her
2- was ex-gf's cat that she left when she left him.... he doesn't know where she got him
3- he offered to take from a friend who was planning to put the cat in a shelter because he was moving to a place he couldn't take pets. argh.
#3 actually got through a screen and ran away (sad) so now we have the rescue dog and 2 cats of unknown origin lol.
@divergirl: I am my cat's 4th home in like a year! Isn't it sad???? At least they are in good homes now!
My first cat, Peter, ended up coming from a pet store. I went to umpteen shelters and there were no kittens, and I had a week off before work to "bond" with him, so I ended up going to the pet store because I felt a time pressure. I was 19 when I got him, so I didn't really think about "where" he was coming from. I wouldn't get another cat from a pet store, but he's lovely and it was meant to be I think :)
Smee came from the Humane Society about 6 months later when Peter was lonely. I was hooked when I saw his huge satellite ears on his tiny little head.
Glory has been with us for about a year. She was a foster from a rescue organization, but we decided to adopt her when we found out Smee had a tumor and were told he didn't have long to live. We thought it would make the transition easier for Peter. She's a huge cuddle monster, and SO playful, she's been an awesome addition to our family! Smee is still kickin' btw, although I think he gets jealous of Glory because she's such a little AW! LOL!
Our cat came from the “animal rescue league”, which is our local shelter. Her mom came in pregnant and was fostered, so T was fostered from birth-6 weeks, which is when we got her at the shelter.
My old dog (RIP) was from the same shelter. Growing up we had purebred Airedales which were from a responsible (AKC show) breeder. Both dogs came from the same breeder and we didn’t pick either puppy – the breeder matched our family’s lifestyle with the puppy that was the best match for us.
I don’t have any beef with truly responsible breeders, but I know that those are a needle in the haystack of what’s out there if you’re looking for a puppy. I would never buy a puppy from a breeder who is only registered with the CKC (Continental Kennel Club), for instance, or who won’t let you come to their home to see the parents/grandparents of the potential puppy.
Our dog came form a shelter. She's a lab/puli mix and is super adorable. We fell in love.
Growing up, we had a mixture of shelter dogs and reputable breeder dogs - mainly purebreds from the breeders. My parents have had a total of 8 dogs (including those they have now) and I believe they were 3 from shelters and 5 from breeders.
We love pets! :)
We got our beautiful (slightly neurotic) pup at 9 weeks old from the local shelter. FI had to have a puppy and really preferred a Lab, and I refused to get one from a breeder, so we just lucked out when our shelter had Lab mix pups!
I really wouldn't have done it any other way, if/when we get another, we will absolutely go to shelters or rescue groups.
Both my cat and dog were found as strays (no owners, identification, or microchips). They would have probably ended up in a shelter for sure (and most likely not a "No Kill" shelter), so I'm very happy I rescued them! Our next animal, pending we don't find another one on the street, will be a shelter dog/cat.
We got our boy cat from a breeder. After my previous Persian's untimely and tragic death, I went a little nuts. I was depressed for months, then became obsessed with finding a kitten that looks just like him. I browsed hundred of Persian cat breeders websites, trying to predict what color kittens would be born when, sending emails to all the breeders getting on waiting lists. I flew from California to Arizona to look at a young cat that I thought resembled him. I finally found this picture of a two-week old blob on a breeder's site and begged her to sell him to me. He's now our beloved Muffin, 3.5 years old. He's nothing like our previous cat in character but still an adorable teddy bear and very much loved.
Our girl cat Honey came from a shelter. When Muffin was a year old, I decided to get him a friend and was adamant in saving a life tis time instead of going to a breeder. I looked at Petfinder daily for months, went to rescue events, yet no cat captured my heart. I didn't want a second cat that I would love less than the one we already had, I thought that would be unfair. One day I spotted this adorable tiny thing on a shelter posting and contacted them. I was planning to go visit her the first day she becomes available but turns out they gave me the wrong info and she was already adopted when I went there:( When the shelter apolegetically told me a rescue group adopted her, I called the rescue and asked if I can foster her. I just had a feeling about that cat and it turned out to be true. She came with all sorts of health problems, feline herpes, IBD, constant sneezing, eye ulcers, dental problems...But I didn't care. It was love at first sight. We adopted her and she's now the little princess of our home.
Here are Muffin and Honey:
