I got my ring appraised at the jeweler where it was purchased.
Bad, because they probably inflate the value to make you think that you're getting a deal, but good because we sent the certificate to the insurance company and my replacement value is over $8,000. We paid a little more than half that, and tacking it on to our existing insurance was only a few dollars every month.
We got it appraised where we purchased it, and then another independent jeweler whose not affiliated with the store we got it at (to make sure we got a good price, which we did).
My ring was appraised by the jeweler who made it and also by another jeweler since we ordered it online. We used an appraiser that had a GIA Graduate Gemologist diploma. They tend to be the most reputable in the industry and GIA certs tend to have the stricest of standards. The jeweler who made my ring gave me the contact info to above jeweler when FI bought the ring. We did not pay anything to have it appraised, though I don't know if this is becasue it was a referral or I ended up actually knowng the woman form a past job I had. Though, I wouldn't think an appraisal would cost much. If you buy form a brick & mortar store they will most likely appraise your ring for more than its worth so you feel like you got a good value for your money. Most online companies like GOG, Blue Nile and Diamond Source of Virginia you will be paying less than the appraisal value. FI paid $7k for my ring and it appraised for more than $11k, the appraiser brought it down to $10k exactly though on the paperwork when we told him the cost of the insurance policy would have gone up even more with the price difference (homeowners insurance). I got quoted for the same ring at my local jewelers for $13k.

For those who have had their ring appraised - where did you go and what's the process (do they do it on site, do you have to leave it, etc.)?
I have a few pieces I'd like to get appraised (including my wedding ring set) and am not sure how to go about doing so. DH bought these pieces at our local jeweler anad I've been shy to ask him (I don't want him to think we are questioning the quality of his work!)
