lol nurseamanda, my wedding is the day before yours and just today I woke up wondering when we are supposed to register.
we registered @ kohl's & the disney honeymoon registry...started the registry around april/may...so i guess 6-7 months in advance?
Hi nurseamanda! Our wedding is in August and we are going to register after the holidays.. We are thinking of going to Bed Bath & Beyond and Macys. So as krissycake said its like 7 months before.
@Nurseamanda - we're practically date twins and we registered two weeks ago (I think we were on the early side).
We wanted to start our registries before we sent our STDs out in January (website will have registry info) and we didn't want to register during the holidays, so we decided to start now.
We decided to register at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for china, crystal, and lots of other basics. We are registering at Crate and Barrel for everyday dishes (we just put the basics on our list now - we'll add more after the holidays because a lot of their items are seasonal). We're most likely also registering at Pottery Barn, but we'll do most of that online after the holidays.
I'm not sure when we're registering either. Our engagement party isn't until January 9,2010, so I doubt we need to register before invitations are sent out for that. (Family friends are throwing it).
Though, I don't know when to send STDs because, well, wouldn't it be weird to get a STD before the engagement party? Blech.
Although Target seems like a natural place to want to register, I've heard some not so good things about them. For instance, apparently they don't always take off what people buy from the registry like they're supposed to, and now they started a new return policy. You are only allowed to return 2 things per YEAR without a gift receipt so if for whatever reason you don't get a gift receipt if you receive doubles, etc...you're SOL!
I have heard good things about Bed Bath and Beyond and Crate and Barrel. I'm getting married in May and haven't registered yet. I figured around the 1st of the year to get started...
I am the odd duck out i guess. I started out amazon, com registry back in April, May? of this year and our wedding isn't until 09/03/2010! i mostly started it though because I was bored one day, we were broke, and fantasy shopping on amazon for a few hours seemed like a great idea. We've added to and removed things since. Other then that, we just registered at Crate & Barrel last Sunday during one of their registration events. We were the ONLY couple there who's wedding wasn't 6 months or less time from that day. But, ya know, we were lured in with the promise of free mimosas and waffles (what we got was orange juice and cake!). Oh, and they gave us a pretty heart-shaped glass bowl for registering. Frankly, I hope everyone uses our wedding registry on amazon because it has a much wider selection of things that we like (from china to board games).
We're getting married July 31, and we're planning on registering before the holidays... in case any of our relatives want to buy us registry gifts for christmas.
Our wedding is in June and I can't wait to register. However, we are waiting until after the holidays. Since I work retail, I know that stores discount a lot of things right after the holidays and I didn't want to worry about "fixing" the registries right away.
Just came across this in trying to figure it all out!
My aunt is having a shower for me right after Christmas, so I think we'll have to register before then. A 250 person wedding - - Crate & Barrel, Target and Williams Sonoma, I think.
We registered in October, but that was mostly because Crate & Barrel and Macy's were having "registry" events. Our wedding isn't until May and I haven't sent my STDs yet.
We registered just a couple of weeks ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. So, five months in advance?
Our wedding was in June and my shower was in April so we registered in February, just a couple months before we expected to start getting gifts (no engagement party). We registered at Crate & Barrel, Bed Bath & Beyond and Macys. Be careful about registering too early, since items can change very frequently (especially at C&B) You dont want to have your heart set on something exclusive to the place then find out they are discontinuing it.
haha, darn!! We're getting married in August of 2011 so I guess that means no registry fun for another year or so! That's fine though, I can understand not wanting to fall in love with something only to have it be discontinued a year from now when people will actually be buying stuff!
We had an engagement party in August but we knew that we would have a super-long engagement (over 2 years to save up & pay for it ourselves!) so we knew registering for that party would be silly.
I'm so glad I found this thread! :-)
We registered crazy early, a bit over a year before the wedding! However my relatives have been known to send unsolicited engagement gifts, and we sent VERY early STD's because for most people it is a destination, and in my family, that's unheard of. Plus, it's a fun thing to do amidst all the planning! We chose Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, and a local NYC store, albeit one with a website, Fish's Eddy.
We registered over a year in advance. ^_^; But in all fairness, we're in a three-year engagement, and people were already asking us where we were registered...and several registry items showed up on Christmas and birthdays. :)
We were going to wait to register, but people started asking as soon as the STDs went out. We are only registered at Crate and Barrel so far and I only registered for things they keep in stock all the time. I'll add more closer to the date.
my wedding is in may and were pretty much done tweaking our registries at target and crate and barrel. i did a post about our experiences at each a few wks ago now (excellent at cb, target sucked). right now they are "private" so guests can't view them, but after thanksgiving we're going to make them live and add the links to our website so people can buy off of it for the holidays if they would like.
We're planning on registering about 6 months out - Crate and Barrel, Macy's, and Bed Bath & Beyond. My first shower isn't until late spring, so it's still plenty of time.
thanks for the info, really helpful! so how's everyones progress so far? alot of us are getting married this spring/summer yay!
We just finished registering yesterday, I'd say 6-9 months out is good. And no harm in registering before then, just make sure the items aren't seasonal and out of stock when your guests get around to ordering!

Our wedding is next July and we're starting to toss around ideas as to where we should register? Where did you register and how far in advance? What were your favorite places and the places you'd recommend avoiding?
