Nordstrom, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Ann Taylor Loft… Those are the stores I buy my work clothes from, probably in that order in terms of frequency that I find good stuff.

Banana Republic and Loft outlets, and sometimes Target. I wear a lot of pencil skirts, too – sometimes it’s easier to find work-appropriate pencil skirts than dresses, and then I can wear shirts I already have with a sweater or blazer. Today I’m wearing a black pencil skirt from BR that was ~$25 from the BR Outlet with a teal sleeveless button-down that I love and a black sweater and gray heels.

I’m fairly tall (5’9) and I always struggle with finding dresses that are long enough for me. It takes some patience, but when you find a fitted dress that fits you just right, it’s so worth the search! I don’t think you need a *huge* work wardrobe, just 5-6 staples (dresses, pencil skirts).

I’ll also add that when I was in college, I got my interviewing suits at Macy’s. Now that I’ve been out of college for 4 years, I’ve noticed those are much poorer quality than the work clothes I’ve bought at Banana Republic and I’ve been phasing them out of my wardrobe. Pay attention to quality! Like hem lines and seams.

I shop Talbots and sometimes Ann Taylor for tailored work looks.  Ann Talylor has very long pants, I think.  I am almost 5’6 and the regular length is usually long on me.

Oh also, I have a couple friends who swear by The Limited for work clothes. You might want to check there as well!

Laurenplusalex:  Yes, I tend to buy dresses or skirts and AT and AT-Loft.  I also like the sale rack at Anthropologie.

I have to dress up for my unpaid clinic hours as well so I understand! If you have an outlet mall anywhere near you, I would suggest looking there. I buy most of my career clothes at Ann Taylor and Van Heusen. I also sometimes get lucky at Ross ($40 for a Calvin Klein dress) and Marshalls.

I shop at The Limited all the time.  They have nice stuff that isn’t ridiculously expensive (and they have sales all the time.)

Not the best quality but NY&Co has some decent career pieces and they usually have terrific sales.

Suzy Shier has nice affordable work clothes, Dynamite, XXI forever has tons of blouses and that beautiful and very affordable. You can also find great bargains from Winners and Marshalls, and H& M is great too.

I shop at Loft, Ann Taylor, Macy’s and Norstrom.

But if you are on a budget, check out Marshalls, Tj Maxx, Kohls, Nordstrom Rack, etc.
