Just wanted to share my experience with overstock furniture. I think I'm just unlucky, but I've bought two pieces there, and they have both cracked. It looks amazing and for the price, it really couldn't be beat, they would have easily been twice the price. I had no problem putting them together, but noticed a few months later that they had cracked. My TV stand has a large 8 in crack in the top now that is really noticible. And my coffee table has just a slight crack on the side and is not noticible. They are both rubberwood.
@pinkshoes: oooh good to know! i just looked online and while the prices are awesome i'm not sure i saw any that fit the style we're going for anyway, and i'm a bit wary about buying online without seeing an example in person to make sure i like it...
Have you tried CB2.com? They are the more modern version of Crate and Barrel.
@crayfish: ooooh i forgot about cb2! thanks, that definitely helps!
I don't know if this will gross you out - but we buy lots of our furniture off of craigslist. TV stand, dining room table + chairs - as long as it is easy to clean, I feel like it's fine to buy off of craigs.
My friend just told me the Ashley Furniture has 14 piece sets for 1,000! Definitely going to check that out soon!
I furnished my whole house from Ashley Furniture and City Furniture... if you like more modern furniture, check out El Dorado!!!!
We have furniture from all over the place. Pottery barn, Haverty's (dunno if you have them nearby or not?), Ikea (love), Crate & Barrel...I have also found a few pieces that I really like online at Target.
I think I'm going to go the Costco route. Their pieces aren't always the most modern, but very classic and since they're from Costco, you know they are quality pieces (and if there's ever a major problem, just take it back!)
I realize this is a crapshoot, but some of our good friends just bought an amazing reclaimed barnwood table off craigslist. Don't overlook something like craigslist just because it's "second hand" - there are some gems to be found!
craigslist and garage sales... yeah, we are THAT cheap! And we have some pretty awesome stuff too!
Craigslist. Awesome. If I had unlimited funding I would get it from sundance catalog, or have it made by someone local.
I did get some from Target, some from local farm and fleet, some from gander mountain, and our bedroom set from a local store. I just wanted clean/ fresh stuff for the bedroom.
We got most of our furniture from Ashley's.. They have some good prices every once in awhile, plus if you have one of their outlet stores near you they will have even better prices.. Target has some great furniture too.. And even Big Lots, we got our entertainment center from there & you definitely can't tell we bought it from a cheaper store.. I had found one at Target I loved for about $200, FI insisted I look around & we found this one it was about $75 cheaper & looks great.
We have bought great furniture from JCPenney. If you find something that you like online, it can be shipped to your nearest JCPenney for you to pick up and there's no shipping charge!
We have also bought furniture from Crate and Barrel outlet and Overstock.
We bought our dining table from Bob's Furniture (I think it's local to NY/NJ though). And we bought our couch and my office desk from Macy's, both on sale. We opened a 12-month no balance transfer card so we have a year to pay off the $1700 purchase. So far, so good. :)
thanks everyone! there are def some options there that i hadn't thought about!
i think i am a little skeeved out by the craigslist option, but ONLY because nyc has had a bedbug problem in recent years, which scares me anyway! we sold a lot of stuff on craigslist before we moved here, and i think if we still lived in dc i'd check it out...
We have bought a lot of our furniture and decor at World Market and Home Goods. I love both stores because the pieces are more unique and interesting and not that expensive. World Market also has really good sales.
I honestly will buy furniture any where as long as it is a good deal. We got our dinning room table free from the savation army.
@PitBulLover: ooh i forgot world market sold furniture!
We got some pieces from Cardi's which were ok at the time, but not great. They were good for when we were just starting out but I'm not thrilled with how they have held up. I guess you get what you pay for though!
We went to Jordans furniture (they might just be in New England?) and were really happy with their selection.
Do you have Ethan Allen out there? I absolutely love there stuff. My brother still has some of it in his basement that my parents bought when they got married 40 years ago, and it is still in awesome shape (but the fabric is ugly, it was the 70's).
In my current apartment, I have furniture from:
Kmart - coffee table, dining room (outdoor) table and chair set
Ikea - Bookshelf and various textiles
Couches - furniture store that closed down years ago
Ethan Allen: Bed
Laytners Linen & Home: Dressing Screens
Also various items from Pier 1 and thrift stores like our dresser, other coffee table, nightstands, lamps, etc.
I love costco furniture, they have great solid pieces for great prices! I have quite a few pieces from there. I also love love love the World Market, we bought our dining room table off craigslist, but it was purchased from the WM 6 months prior and I got it for half of the retail price :)
Everything new we need we get on Craigslist. My MIL has a degree in interior design and finds stuff for us all the time.
Pier 1 has some really good sales at the end of seasons and I've seen great dining sets from them.
Our dining set is a mix of JCPenney catalog and Crate and Barrel. The JCP stuff is on sale often and pretty good quality (I'd say better than the Crate and Barrel stuff!)

hi bees! now that dh and i have signed a lease for a new apartment, we're on the hunt for some new furniture since our new place is bigger. mostly, we're thinking of dining room tables, since we will finally have room for one(!!!!). most of our current furniture is ikea, which i'm really pretty happy with, but the ikea dining table options haven't wowed me (i've only looked online though). i've been browsing the other stores that i can think of--west elm, crate and barrel, and pottery barn, and i think we're leaning towards one from west elm, but there must be awesome stores i'm forgetting...any ideas? and also, why are dining tables so darn expensive???! sheesh!
