I live off the road system in bush Alaska. I love/hate it. I love the 24 hour sunshine in the summer, I love that I can own a house on the beach for next to nothing, I love that everyone knows my name and is willing to help 24 hours a day. I love that little old ladies yell at the teenagers from accross the street and the teenagers listen! and I love, above almost anything, that there are opprotunities for someone to do absolutely anything they want to here and you can find a way to make it work.

What I don't like...  crime rates, child abuse rates, the high cost of living (fuel is $6.00/gal and milk is $7.oo if you are lucky) I also don't like that it is nearly impossibly to get fresh produce, There are fairly high rates of poverty and multigenerational poverty which makes me glad I am never going to have to raise a family here. Also something HUGE that I HATE is that our hospital is run by indian health services so if you are not native they don't have to see you. The dentist too. Because I am not native I have to fly myself to Anchorage to go to the dentist... that part SUCKS!

If I were to live anywhere it would be in a small town somewhere close to a body of water, or in the mountains. I am in love with Idyllwild CA, and Door Co. WI, I am origionally from the midwest and I will never be moving back to my home town, but Madison has always been a great city in my book, totally laidback and progressive with a bit of old school charm.

I live in Alexandria, VA about 8 miles outside of Washington DC.  The job market is really good and there's lot of free stuff to do (museums, etc), but you have to deal with a lot of tourists (especially summer) and the housing market is pretty expensive.  I wouldn't say I love living here or hate living here, it's okay.

Where do you live, do you love it, and why?  AND, why do you live there?  We live in Scottsdale, AZ near Phoenix and we HATE IT. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!!!! We had to move here so FI could get temporary work.

What makes you like or dislike a place? It is always hot and crummy, it is ALWAYS super busy, everyone drives like a maniac, nobody goes the speed limit, every time we go out we almost get into an accident due to people pulling into the middle of the intersection. There is a lot of crime, you have to go like 2 hours out of the city before you get to a decent non-city-setting for outdoor activity where you wont be sharing your space with 1million of your closest pals. IT IS SO EXPENSIVE. We pay 1000 dollars a month to rent a 750sq ft 1 bedroom  apt. There are SCORPIONS EVERYWHERE, as a matter of fact, we averaged 1 every 2 weeks from moving in July until December. People have been so rude everywhere we go.

NOW. For the logical explanation of my absolute seething hatred of this place - I have never lived in the city. I have never, ever wanted to live in the city. I grew up in Southern Ohio among beautiful forests and hills, cornfield mazes in the fall, amish apple butter up the road. I am not cut out for this lifestyle. FI is from Bozeman, Montana, and we lived there until we had to move, and I would move back in a heartbeat to MT. It is the most beautiful and friendly place I have ever lived, the perfect size, perfect weather, perfect scenery, close to Yellowstone National Park, and a beautiful downtown. Population size is perfect. Hopefully we can move back some day. I had never been happier. If we dont move back to MT, we will move back to Ohio, either way we will be happy to get out of this place.

@globalmargaret:  Ahhh Alaska, gorgeous! I have relatives in Juneau and Anchorage. And how on earth do you know about Idyllwild, CA???? My mom has a house up there and it is really pretty and very, very tiny. :)

We live in a small philly suburb. I love it. I grew up in Farm Country, PA (LOL) and it took me a while to get used to the suburb. Now that we live really closely to everything we need and there is so much to do, I love it. Took me a while because of the contrast from where I grew up, but I can't imagine ever moving.

Except that PA weather stinks. It would be nice to be in a warmer, more stable-weather area someday...

My fiance and I live in Richmond, VA and we HATE it.  I grew up 20 miles south of Richmond and my Fiance grew up in a rural area about an hour from Richmond and both of us are counting the days until I graduate and we can leave! I think we've just both been here too long and are bored with it.  The art museum is world class and Maymont park is historic and beautiful.... but we've been so many times that it isn't as exciting, lol.  We aren't really into the artistic scene or the local bands, but many people enjoy those.  I love King's Dominion and Busch Gardens so much.  I will miss those amusement parks when I leave....  KD was my first job and I worked there for 5 years. <3

Pros:  Lots of art galleries and art events.  VA Museum of Fine Arts gets wonderful exhibits from Egypt, Russia, France... etc.  Two big amusements parks nearby (King's Dominion and Busch Gardens).  Many shopping options (3 large malls and many many stores everywhere). Four seasons of weather.  Affordable housing (but I think most of the houses in the suburbs here are ugly, lol)

Cons:  CRIME.  I live in a good area West of the city, so it doesn't directly affect me.  There were a couple incidences where we had to call the police on people who were pounding on our door being sketchy, though.  We are hunters and well armed, so we weren't too scared.  Watching the news about the rest of the city is downright depressing, though.  Over the past week or so: 3 year old twins had thier throats slashed by their father in a murder/suicide.  Woman killed by boyfriend.  Body found floating down canal.  Body found laying in road.  Body found in apartment complex.  Store robbed at knifepoint and shop owner shoots robber who is later found nearby with a gunshot wound.  Woman goes on trial for killing pregnant woman.  You get the idea.  I HATE watching the News!!!!   I've traveled to many areas and I've never seen evening news that's so violent.  I usually stay away from those areas, but I had a short rotation in one of these violent neigborhoods a few weeks ago and I was terrified.  Needless to say, I didn't go the speed limit when getting out of there in the evening.

More Cons:  is that the area doesn't know how to handle winter weather.  We haven't had any this year, but typically when it snows, Richmond shuts down for days while they slowly clear roads.  All the schools close even if three snowflakes fall, lol.  That was awesome when I was a kid, but not so much now that I have to get to work and college.  The summers are always 100% humidity and a heat index over 100 degrees.  I'm pretty used to it from working outside at the theme parks for so many years, but I know it bothers many people.  Most people who move here from out of state have awful trouble with allergies.  I used to have snowball fights with the pollen tumbleweeds when I was a kid, so I think I'm immune, lol.  It's sad to watch my classmates suffer though.  During pollen seasons you will see PILES of it laying around and your car will be yellow no matter what color it is painted.

Anyway,  enough of my rambling/venting.  Once May 2013 rolls around, we will be heading to the West Coast!!!  I told my employer that my top choices would be Santa Barbara, CA and San Diego, CA Laughing

Where do you live, do you love it, and why?  We live in a Massachusetts suburb. We love it because we grew up here and its our home.

AND, why do you live there? We live here because it's where we grew up and we've created a life here. Our families and friends are here as well. I work in the city and communte about an hour or so to work which is fine with me beacuse I like the quietness of the burbs when I'm home. The hustle and bustle of the city was great when I was in college but now not so much. I can pretty much only hack it for work. We have all 4 seasons here although this winter I completely forget what snow looks like.

What makes you like or dislike a place? What do you like about yours?  Dislike?  We like it here because its what we know but its also home to us. We've talked about moving out of state and moving south but right now its not practical because our familes depend on us to much. Maybe some where down the road. The only thing I dislike about it here is the winter. Don't get me wrong I love a good snow day but after awhile I just want spring to come. This year though we've had basically no snow at all.

Where would you like to live? We've discussed moving to somewhere in the Carolina's but again not anytime soon.

Are you happy where you are? Yes

**I want to preface this by saying that I am not a negative person by nature! :)

I live in LA. I hate it here. It's filthy. I tell people who don't live here all about it and they don't believe me. They say "But it looks so pretty in the movies!" This is because those movies aren't shot here. It's never ever dark. There are always lights on. And people are EVERYWHERE. I hate LA.

I moved here because FI works in film. So we have to be close to Hollywood/Burbank/Santa Monica. Housing prices are insane because people keep coming. It never fails to surprise me that there are so many people who are so eager to breathe this nasty air. Air is supposed to be clear. Ours isn't.

The weather is really nice, though. And it's nice to live near the beach.

I told FI that we can stay here for 2 more years and then we're hightailing it back to Orange County. That's where I grew up. So laid back. There's nothing but taco stands and surf shops as far as the eye can see. Here is what I always tell people who are thinking of moving to LA: Don't. Move to the OC and take the commute. Your life will thank you.

Thank you all so much for participating, I love this thread.  It is nice to hear about different places and loves and hates.

I want to live somewhere that I can walk around, where they are things to do (whether nightlife/ museums/ restaurants/ shopping/ theater or outdoor activities like fishing, camping, hiking) all year round and a place that is not All-American (preferably more liberal, but I have values, so not overboard.)  Yeah.  That is my ideal.

I currently live in Madison, Wi.  I hate it here.  Well, I have lived in worse places in some ways- but for the most part I hate it for these reasons.  N.1- the weather!  I hate the cold cold cold cold like no other cold.  A cold, windy, wet and unbearable cold.  Winters are dark and long and dangerous for driving and icy and there is nothing to do except walk around Walmart (I HATE Walmart!  And I don't even shop there!) or go drinking- which is tough to do unless you live in the downtown because you basically have to drive everywhere you go.

It might just be my current plight (moving here after college, being married so not having roommates etc.) that is a difficult adjustment and affects the way I feel about it, but for the most part it isn't great.  It seems like there is nothing to do here except have children.  I don't mean to be negative or harsh, but it really seems that way.  I feel like most people that live here are from here.  It is very all-American and the housing is expensive for what it is.  I don't like sports and that is a huge thing here.  I feel like all there is to do is eat a pint of ice cream in front of the tv.  Yikes!

I moved here with DH before we got married, after college, to figure out- where/ what next?  It is sort of a time-out place for us to decide and transition.  I just hate.it.here.  I really am not negative, I just really do.  It feels like a small town.  I dislike living somewhere where it feels like everyone is from there.

I like diversity.  On the not-so-negative, um...?  Hm.  I can't think of much!  It could be worse- crime isn't terrible, um... I guess the schools are good if you have kids, and I guess the UW is good if are going to school... I know a lot of great artists have come out of WI and I am convinced it is because there is so little to do otherwise!

We live in Manhattan.  For the most part I love it, and have been living here for 8 years.  But there are definitely times when I get annoyed with things like traffic, MTA issues, small apartments, terrible grocery stores, etc.  Then I think about the great things the city has to offer; amazing restaurants, great culture, fabulous shopping, etc and I know why we're still here.  Also, DH and I both grew up in the burbs, and have jobs that make NYC the ideal place for us to live.  So net, net, defintely don't see us moving anytime soon.

@lanany10:  My sister lives in Manhattan and, although she hates being a serial renter, I don't see her leaving anytime soon!  She loves the people, all there is to do, the shopping, the restaurants.  I would love to live in NYC!  I think one of the reasons she also loves it is because no one in our family lives there and my parents probably never will...

@hismm:  Good to know about AZ!  DH is from Bozeman too, and I went to school in Missoula.  I miss MT so so so much!  If I was wealthy or retired, that is where I would be, but we found that we wanted to leave to do more... we might move back someday too.  My only complaint is that there is not more diversity, but I sure love the land.

@calypso522:  Wow, that sounds rough!  We really want to move to CA as well.  DH wants to finish school (which will actually take him a few years as I think he is switching careers :/) but I think Santa B, or Santa Cruz, or even Northern Ca are my ideal places.  :)

@globalmargaret:  Alaska in the bush, that is so awesome.  I bet it definitely has its charms... and challenges.  I am have a hard time right now with Madison's winters.  I think that is the hardest part about it here.  It isn't terrible though, I love many things about Madison- low crime, great schools.  But the housing is expensive and the winter is really tough.  You can't really go outside!  But for the Midwest, it has charm and a little diversity.

I LOVE Door County.  I love it.  I would love to live up there someday; rural, but tourists come through, beautiful, feels like an ocean.  I spent a lot of time up there because I grew up near Green Bay.

I loved living in Hawaii, but it too had its difficulties with its charms.  I love living off the grid (I did in MT and HI), but I also want to do a lot with my life and education and be involved... if that makes sense!  Cool, we have a lot if common.  I love water and mountains too...  I would love all that sunshine.  That is crazy about the hospitals though!!!  What do you do up there, might I ask?  We are thinking of moving to New Mexico... then eventually CA.

@hismm:  I lived in Whitefish, MT for 3 years and LOVED it. I would have stayed if it weren't so far away from my family in NH. I moved back to the east coast, met my DH,  and now live in MA- just north of Boston. I do love our home and neighborhood but I miss the mountains and the slower pace of life. I've been back a few times since and hope to continue visiting as often as I can. Someday, DH and I plan move back to NH, probably somewhere on the seacoast. I'm definitely not a city girl so I'd love to have more land and less traffic :)

@cbee:  Ohh...isn't it the most beautiful place? I try to explain it to my friends out here and they just can't understand why I loved it so much. Until you see the mountains and experience the wildlife and outdoor activities, you really can't appreciate just how amazing it is. I went to Banff, BC when I was out there and that is the only place I've ever been to that rivaled MT in beauty.

@Vitsippa:  Oh wow wow wow!  How lovely to live in Sweden!  My aunt moved there over 20 years ago.  She went to visit and fell in love and moved there around 1990.  I would love to live in a socialist democracy.  I need to go visit, I would love to paint there...

So, I think we are moving!  I am pretty excited about it.  We found a place where we can both finish advanced degrees that is warm, affordable, and has mountains.  Then, we hope to move to California- for mountains and ocean and I'll open a studio, or get a job teaching, or both.  It is a lot of stress, but I am happy to have a plan.

Thank you all so much for your input, I love hearing about why people live where they do and how they feel about it.  It sounds like some people love Chicago, but a lot of negatives about LA.  Really, this has been super interesting and good to hear!

@Midgely:  I loved HI too!  I lived on Big Island and I loved it.  Loved it!

@dolphi99:  That is my main complaint - I do not want to have to deal with another upper midwest winter!  It gets me down, it isn't worth it to me.  It is dark and cold and I feel kind of trapped inside.  I also live in an apartment for the first time, so I am learning that might be a big part of it.  From now on, only condos, townhouses, duplexes, even 4plexes for me!
